View Full Version : Caesareans, Pain Relief Drugs and Breastfeeding
Hello
As my baby's birth is getting closer (15 weeks to go til I'm unzipped  ) my questions regarding the birth and post birth keep coming....
So, my question this time is... What pain relief drugs were you given after your caesarean? What are the strongest ones available that pose no harm to baby if you are breastfeeding? Do you think the pain relief drugs you were given worked to your satisfaction?
Last time I was given panadol (i think) or something similiar but in a supository form  ... sorry tmi - that wasnt the nicest part of post-caesarean....

firstly congratulations for planning to have your baby on my birthday!!
i was given voltaren tablets and panadol toblets - i just point blank refused the suppositories, there had been quite enough poking around in my nether regions by that point! I also breastfed and stayed on the voltaren for about 3 days. i know different hospitals give different things but i was absolutely fine with the above combo and went home less than 48 hours after he was born :)

All I had after was panadol and the occasional ibuprofen. I didn't have a drip etc of any kind. That's what I was given in hospital too, so I figure it must have been fine for breastfeeding.

can you believe that until I read that you had a suppository I would not have said that I had one, but it rings bells. It is like a dream, but I am pretty sure I had a suppository - how weird is that:o . But from the time that I actually remember I had voltaren for a couple of days and then just panadol.
i was given tramel i think that was what it was the am after before i got out of bed abd then from that afternoon i was given panadol and ibuprofen untill i went home i did not breastfeed so dont know about that. They offered me suppositories(sp) but i said "NO WAY"

i was given pandol for the first 12 hours then nothing. i didnt need anything at home so bf was no drama and i was home within 26 hours:smiliedance:
i had jake at 1 in the morning .till about 11 the same morning i had self administered morphine (but i had a bit of extra work done there as my uterus had been previously damaged...so dont know if i get it this time) after that panadol (orally). was never mentioned to me they were dangerous to b/f
After the c-section I had a pethidine drip I think which I could press the button whenever I needed relief. After that I was offered some pain tablet but I never actually needed it (well I did but wanted to go home so the quicker I could show to them I was good the sooner I could go home). I breastfed and no one mentiomned the drugs being bad.

I was given the same for almost 24 hours after the c-section and then I was given panadine forte tablets until bubs came back from special childrens hospital (I think i got the strong stuff cos i had to drive 45 minutes to see bubs so it was a 1.5hour round trip for 4 days)........when i was discharged i was recommended panadine tablets.
I wasnt told if any medication i was given would harm breastfeeding. I kinda assumed that if there was a problem they wouldnt be giving them to me because the hospital promoted breastfeeding so anything they gave had to be safe for the baby.
Hi,
I had complications so wasn't allowed voltaren, but had a substitute called dremadol also pethadine every 4 hours that was pure heaven!! Pethadine was the best for me, then the dremadol And I was breastfeeding.

I had a drip in me during the actual c-section, and then it remained in there until it has run out. After that, it was just panadol.
A student midwife snuck me an ibuprofen once...and I was so relieved (it didn't work wonders...but it helped much better than the lousy panadol...panadol doesn't even cure me a mild headache:rolleyes: ).
It's a pretty big shame that you can't really have anything stonger...because, in my case, it was quite painful (well, walking around was...sitting in bed doing nothing was a lot more cushy).
I had voltaren suppositries...:o
But did they work?!!! 12 hour pain relief, needed nothing else, no constipation from them (my sister had big problems after her c-section from the panadeine...), they didn't make me tired... AND FELT NO PAIN (unless I sneezed  )
Honestly, after labour, then c/s, then a sponge bath I had absolutley no dignity and couldn't have cared less  (and i really wasn't with it till days 3 - after blood transfusions)

I had a morphine drip for the first day and a suppository of goodness knows what, then I had Endone for the next day or two along with ibobrufen (apparently different family of medication so could be taken in tandem), then panadol by the clock. I was actually really surprised to find panadol did anything, I guess I have always seen it as next to useless but I could clearly tell when they had worn off.
I breastfed throughout, although my milk was late to come in because I had a long traumatic labour and emergency C-section. Being able to hold my baby without too much pain and to get up to him if I needed to (albiet slowly) was great.
I was actually told I would have a quicker recovery if I took the pain killers because I would be able to move about more effectively and my body could concentrate on healing rather than managing pain.
Thanks for your replies...
I'm not sure what kind of Suppository I had, cant even really remember if it worked either - i'm just convinced that I do not want to have to grip the bed rails, lay on my side, stare up at the ceiling and thinking 'can you get your finger outta my bum now please':p
What is voltaren?
Wouldnt it be good if you could choose your pain relief drugs :smiliedance: 'Ooh yes, I'll have some of that, that and that please with some H2o on the rocks thanks'
Self administered sounds like the go to me

I had an emergency c sect. Ive been breastfeeding since day 1 and never had any pain... and now think Im lucky!! I was given a form of morphine ibruprofen panadol and voltaren.. but not all at once lol
Since coming home thet recommended I take nurofen plus which Im meant to stop in a week or two. They offered a script of Panadine Forte but Ive had probs taking this in the past. Maybe you need to smile nicely at the anathateist (sp?) while in surgery?? Or cry lots??

i had tramal and panadol together every 4 hours on the dot... and pethadine for 4 days... i hated pethadine it made me itch like crazy and actually hallucinate:eek: but it did the job as far as pain relief goes...
i was in acute care so the nurses there were really great and made sure i was not in too much pain. they actually gave me a few different drugs to try and see which had the best effect on me... acute care was "The HIlton" compared to the feral maternity ward :banghead:
