oh no! teeth!

DS has just had his two top teeth come through, one is all the way out and the other just poking through, and they graze against my nipple and it KILLS! He doesn't bite, it's just the way his mouth sits :( any tips please???

Same here!! I've found it hurts more on the right then the left which is odd.

I've just been telling dd no, and putting a finger in her mouth then re attaching.

If anyone has some good tips as I had her off the right one for a few days.

Fabulous - something to look forward to. My boy is almost 6 mths and his first tooth is only just visible thru his gum but im dreading when they come thru fully.. :(

How about some different feeding positions? I know it might not stop the grazing, but it may give the affected areas of nipple time to heal. He also might hold his mouth differently in a different position...

It's better lying down, but if i'm out and about that's a bit difficult :laughing: plus he tends to move to wherever he pleases these days.

DS2 moves heaps too, often forgetting to take his mouth off my nipple...OUCH!! We do most of the night feeds laying in bed, a lot more comfortable. DS2 only has bottom teeth so far, might have to change it around a bit when the top ones come through. There's another position called the football hold (under your arm with his forehead facing the middle of your chest) but size of bubs can be difficult and a bit awkward to get the positioning right.

Dd has 4 teeth now and even laying down doesn't help.

And I really want to bf to 1.5 years ;(

DS just got his top teeth too. Well one of them, and the other is coming through. He is grazing my left nipple atm.

What I found with my DD's is that by the time they were both fully through they had to figure out how to feed differently and the teeth weren't a problem any more.

My biggest problem is that Ds finds it a hilarious game to clamp down on my nipple and then when I stick my pinky in to break the seal he goes in to fits of giggles, no matter how much I ignore him. He is improving on it though.


Just stick with it...the teeth do become a non issue again.

It will pass when he learns how to feed again with them. In the mean time you can try to re-teach him, just the same as when he was a new born, if its hurting take him off again and re-attach, kindly telling him its no its hurting.

The same will happen when he gets his bottom. But I've found the bottom isn't as bad.

As they get older and bigger (taller) you will probably have to re-adjust your hold, because they will tend to come from above you boob, and can start to drag down on your nipple and those nasty top teeth can leave indents. Try holding them just the way you would a new born, their body close to your chest which will allow their heads to drop back, chin to boob and take in heaps of boobie.

With a little persistence, it won't last forever.

I found it was painful when DD first started getting teeth through but it didn't last. She now has 8 teeth (nearly 10 as 2 are close to popping out) and there is no pain when i b/f (unless she bites me, which happens occasionally).
I would just try to stick it out, if you can, and it may just stop being a problem once the teeth are fully out and he learns to feed with them.

I hope it improves for you, i know exactly the pain you are referring to and it really does hurt a lot.

Yes I went through the same thing, I'd have little indents on my nipples after a feed, it really hurt! But like PP have said, it didn't last, he must've learnt to adjust his position or something.
