View Full Version : does the nesting instinct disappear when bub is born?

Hey girls,

sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I'm curious as a first time mum to be:

My nesting instinct has set in big time with this pregnancy, I have gone from being a "do as much housework as is necessary to keep the place looking tidy" girl, to a "can't stand two dirty dishes sitting on the sink, and have to have the shower sparkling" kinda girl.

I suddenly love cleaning out the cupboards, doing the washing, hate to see dishes not done, changing sheets twice as often as I used to etc.
:smiliedance:

And to be honest I love it!!!! I love having a sparkly house and feeling the sense of acheivement that goes with it. But I am worried that once bub is born I will revert to my old ways. I mean obviously I will have to slacken up a bit as I will have a bub to focus on and I definitely can't see myself being a supermum:p !! But I would love to think a bit of my new self will stay with me;

So what has been your experience? I would love to hear from mums who can tell me what happened to their nesting once bub arrived?

Thanks!!:D

Mine stayed a week after.

The day i came home from hospital I found my house a complete disaster. Apparently me being away was a little holiday for DP who ordered pizza every night and played computer games non-stop. An hour after being discharged, I was preparing dinner and putting away dishes.

Who's got time for housework with a new bub? I don't! I just do the bare minimum now. Newborns are VERY demanding. I used to love having a neat, tidy and clean house. Now I just settle for semi-presentable! :D

:fingerscrossed: Mine stays!!! I'm loving this obsession with cleaning... everything is glowing :D....oh, except my bedroom, it's never looked messier... not sure why my nesting thing hasn't popped itself out for that one

everyday I had to clean one entire room in my house in late pregnancy! Could not rest untill it was done. I think you get slightly possesed! haha and when I say entire room I mean ENTIRE room! Skirting boards, window tracks etc etc
DP came home one day I was about 8mths preg and found me standing on top of one of our kitchen stools in the bedroom with a duster. He freaked out and told me to get down then I burst into tears (Yes pregnancy hormones are fun!) and said but theres still dust up there pointing at the fan!! He never lets me forget that one
My clean freak stage went totally after birth though im so lazy with housework now :shame: wish just a little bit of it had stuck around!

Mine disappeared because I was looking after a newborn and a toddler and didn't have the time or energy to keep the house tidy. I did the bare minimum.

Although I did do a thorough clean room by room a few months ago and DH came home from work and said "you're not pregnant are you?" NOOOOO

it is completely and totally 100% gone

if it is a choice between housework and a shower - shower!
if it is a choice between housework and sitting down to read/watch tv/whatever in peace - not housework
if it is a choice between housework and sleep - surely i don't need to tell you which one wins .....

for ds mine stayed while he was too young to make a mess. when they geu older and toys are everywhere you'd do your head in being totally on top off everything. not sure how i will go this time with a newbie and a 5 yr old...i mean he picks up his stuff ....sometimes :banghead:

OMG Michelle this is me exactly!!!! :D

But sounds like the general consensus is that I might as well make the most of it while it lasts cause it's not gonna stick around- shame!!

Oh well, I have now warned DF not to get used to this new neat freak me cause it won't be lasting!!:banghead:

But then again if I had to choose between having a beautiful new bub or being a clean freak- gee now which am I gonna choose?!?:)

I went from cleaning every thing every day to thanking the inventor of baby wipes for such a universal product that I could wipe the whole house with when I had a spare two seconds.

LOL I love baby wipes!!! I'll still be buying them long after DD is toilet trained lol

I can happily say some of my manic nesting period has stuck around! Which is great considering I was pretty messy most of the times lol
It comes and goes though, not a constant stream. I'll just snap into one of those moods and not be able to stop til I can smell domestos from the car! lol

DD's used to it too, thank god... she just let's me clean while she messes everything else up
