Hello,

im just wondering how much your PHI is?

I'm with medibank & i have my options (hospital & extras) NO pregnancy.. its about $70 p/m I'm on a singles because my grandmother pays for mine (VERY LUCKY!!! i know).

But DP's with mutual community and his is $90 PER MONTH! He just turned 25.. he needed to be on a higher thing because he has sleep apnoea and just incase he needed something covered for his machine etc, and thats just basic hospital:freakingout:

I rang medibank for pregnancy and it went upto $123 PER MONTH! and mutual was $125..

I'm just looking to see how much other people pay?? I haven't heard of any other companys in south australia.

I pay $150.50 a month for SGIO (which is MBF now??) $200 excess top hospital family cover, the only things we aren't covered for are hip replacement, cataracts and dialysis. We hardly ever use it which is why I'm glad DF gets $3000 a year PHI allowance through work.

We have top hospital and top extras and pay around $220/month. Its alot, but we have been using it for dental and speech therapy lately. I am thinking of just dropping back to top hospital and standard extras though.

DD2 has had issues in the past and may need further surgery, so we will always have it just in case.

DP has just organized this for us, it'll be salary sacrificed through his work and will cost $13 a fortnight for the 3 of us :)

Am i getting ripped off?
We are based in melbourne.
We are with HBA. have the basic extras and a reasonable health cover for hospital.
And we pay $260 a month for a family. 2 adults and 1 child.
And $260 is after you get the thing back. So all together i pay $3120 a year and get nothing back!

$240.00 per month with MBF. It's a corporate policy and it's fantastic. It's the top one you can get and we have a $0.00 excess.

It *was* $260 a month for top hospital only, no extras, no excess.

I say was because I cancelled it and it expired today. It's way too expensive for what we need or use. Public will be fine for whatever we need and if our children need something urgently I'll pay for it.

$140 odd at the moment with Medibank singles cover. Once bubba is here dh will come onto my policy and bubba will be added and it goes up to $280 a month

We are with HBF and pay $113 a fortnight- a bit cheaper if you pay year of course.

That covers 2 adults and 2 kids. I had one bub private and it was 400 excess. It was actually really good because I went to my ob as a public patient and he bulk billed so that part cost nothing ( sorry OT!)

We mainly use ours at the moment for chiropractics and dental.

120 per fornight. For 2 adults and however many kids. For hospital plus top extras. We wanted it for pregnancy and top dental. We have a 250 hospital excess

$310 a month for second highest family cover with Medibank Private.

We are in Vic though, it is the most expensive place to have private health insurance and it really is state by state. I think it was $210 when in SA but can't remember back to that.

It is a drain but we do use it. I have lots of pro-lapse issues that I wouldn't even be getting appointments for if I were trying to go private.

It is worth it to me for peace of mind. It is not about what you pay for me. For me it is about peace of mind. It is all well and good to say that you will just pay up front or go public but unless you are about to die from your condition you could be in pain for years depending on what you are suffering from, as you sit on a waiting list because you are deemed not critical. With private insurance you would see a specialist in weeks. There are so many conditions that are more like this than critical so it makes sense to me.

Also, if my kids go into hospital I can stay overnight with them. It is not always an option in the public system and that would be horrible.

Thats how I think too. Its just like car insurance or house insurance but its for your health.

I dont think we will ever be without it

We pay $192.60 a month for 2 adults and 4 children with medibank privtate. we have hospital and extra's cover with unlimited general dental and a $500 excess for hospital - its so high because we very rarely go to hospital and you only have to pay it once a year per person anyway.

Specialist appointments aren't covered by private health anyway, it's only inpatient services so when you see a specialist it's irrelevant if you have private health.

We pay $110 per fortnight with the Commonwealth Bank Health Society. That is for top extras and comprehensive hospital cover for the 3 of us. I am glad we have it, I had to have a knee reconstruction a few years ago and it didn't cost me a cent, looking at the statement I saved myself $7,000 in costs! We also use the extras a lot for physio, osteo etc and we both wear glasses so that is useful too!

We have top everything but no pregnancy with Commonweath Bank for $120 a fortnight. That covers all 5 of us with no excess for hospital stays.

Pretty good if you ask me considering all 3 kids need tonsils out later this year.

$70ish a fortnight for i don't know what, DF is the one that knows what the details are.
I know DD1's physio is covered, so is dental and optical...thats all we ever use it for, it does cover more but i have never looked into it.

Cupcakes - Mine's not with comminsure, it's the health fund which is for staff and family of staff only, not sure if that's the same as you tripletime?

I am so glad we do have PHI - considering the huge waiting lists for surgeries in the public sector. The wait for tonsillectomy here for kids is over 2 years! eeek!

I have just found out it really varies state to state.

We used to have Medibank Private top cover at $270 per month.

I changed to HCF, dropped maternity cover :D, and was paying $190 per month.

Moved from Qld to WA and it dropped to $150 per month just by changing our address.

We are with HBF too & pay $140/month for the 6 of us. We have the Smart Saver Twin Pack. It's hospital cover, ambulance, dental (but not orthodontic), optical, podiatry, chiro & physio. Out hospital excess is $100, but only once per year (if we have more than one hospital claim in the same year). Have been really happy with HBF for quite a few years.

Specialist appointments aren't covered by private health anyway, it's only inpatient services so when you see a specialist it's irrelevant if you have private health.

It is not irrelevant because you actually get an appointment. They won't even see you if you do not have private health insurance. They tell you "ok yep you are on the public waiting lists... we will call you". Yes you pay upfront but the point is that you wouldn't be seen at all in the public sector for a lot of common illness as the waiting lists are so long. (talking years).

For me personally... we couldn't afford private insurance two years ago and I was always covered by my parents until we got married. I was told that to see somone it would be over two years to see them, and then there was a 5 to 10 year waiting list for the operation I need. I figured that a 12 month waiting period for my health insurance to cover my pre-existing condition, called the specialist.. got asked my level of cover. Told them. Got an appointment for the next month.

My Dh is a doctor in the hospital. I was sad when he told me that a joke some doctors do, is say "ok HBA positive patient on list blah blah blah" and the consultant will say "send em in". Even in emergency with strict guidlines the consultants choose who they want, and they always pick a certain number of patients covered by insurance that day.:eek: Might not be allowed... but happens.

We are very lucky to have HBF in Perth as they offer fantastic packages,

Dh, DD & I have full hospital + extras (dentist/physio/eyes etc) + maternity + full ambulance cover for $140 per month.

It's worth us having as I am blind as a bat, and use it for my contacts/glasses. And also due to the age, our tax savings is better if we have PHI.

Boring random information for you:

I sat down & worked out the other night how much we have paid in PHI (22 years I have been a member at the highest rate I am paying now, so of course it was much cheaper 22 years ago without maternity cover) but at worse I have paid $36000 to HBF.
I have had my appendix out, I have had numerous small surgeries, DH has had his wisdom teeth out & a large surgery to fix a deviated septum, 22 years of glasses & contacts, dentist bills & check ups, the occasional visit to the physio or chiro and DD's birth- going off the cost of the stays & doctors bills that we see but don't pay they have paid out the same if not more than what I have paid to them.

melbournemummy, I've always worked for private specialists and appointments were given to whoever phoned for one.

I am seeing a private obstetrician for this pregnancy and I don't have health insurance. I wasn't even asked if I had it.

If you want to see a specialist in their private rooms just ring and make an appointment.

It is only if you want to have any inpatient hospital surgery that you can use private health insurance but you can still have the surgery privately without it, you just pay the bill. Nobody is forcing you to go publicly to see a specialist and there is no requirement to go on a public waiting list.

Why would it be 2 years to see someone unless you're asking for a public appointment? That's unheard of privately and like I said for any in rooms appointment, private health don't pay a cent anyway.

I thought this when I got my account thingy from when I had DD. HCF payed my hospital over $7000 for my birth. Thats just my hospital stay and delivery room cost. That doesnt include what they payed my OB, rebate from the anethesist.

Thats just one thing we claimed. There was still pregnancy massages, dentist, chiro, glasses and physio that we claimed. For us its well worth it

So you're saying that even if I was a millionaire, if I didn't have health insurance I wouldn't be able to see a specialist privately? That's absurd. If you're willing to pay you can see whoever you feel like.

I worked all over Brisbane in all different specialty areas: orthopaedics, urology, colorectal, gastroenterology, with an allergist, cardiologist, ophthalmology and others I can't recall right now.

Appointments were usually within a few weeks and surgery anytime after that, maybe a week or two. If you're prepared to pay you get an appointment.

Lack of private health insurance doesn't automatically make you a public patient.

Note to self...never move to Melbourne.

We have PHI but be buggered if i would want to live somewhere that someones money is not good enough for a specialist.
We unfortunately have seen quite a few since having DD1 and never was PHI needed just to be seen, all we needed was a referral from her GP or pead...bugger that for a joke.

TinyLittleTootsies
22-01-2011, 22:29
No, no of course you can pay if you want to. The point is that not many do that and it limits your choices. A lot don't take you on if you do not have the insurance full stop, even if you can afford it. (If you are a millionaire then probably they would give you special treatment.)

In the personal problems I listed, I called and called specialists trying to make appointments and none would take me as a public patient except for that initial consultation. Which is fine if you just want to find out what you have, but I needed more than that. My point is that a LOT of issues are considered elective to have fixed... and yet for the person suffering it is not even a choice to live the rest of your life like that. These things often have very long waiting lists in public and the private doctors are there to make money, not take on public patients.
There are so many people to see them, and they then have to cut back numbers somehow. There are long waiting times in private here I have found too, but I prefer waiting a month or four for my appointment.

I know of a lot of specialists who just do it for the money and never see a public patient. This narrows down the amount available who will see you... this is what I am talking about... narrows it down to the point of not being able to get an appointment.... and that is what I am talking about. I am not saying it is not possible or not legal. I am really tired so maybe not making much sense here. lol.

And yes, in Melbourne the health system is so SHI**** right now. Don't move here if you have problems needed fixing soon. QLD have their own rules for healthcare too.

 yeah not sure I'll be moving to Melbourne in a hurry either!

We even did our whole IVF workup with a few specialists and first cycle without insurance. All privately, just paid for it ourselves, no problems. :)

I have to agree with MelbourneMummy.

I know a few people who already have got stopped by the system.

My grandparents friend had bowel cancer, was not in health cover. They denied him an operation.
He said i will pay you $35,000 up front now cash and they did accept him however that is because he handed them the money straight up.
HE WENT into health cover after that. hehehe... they didnt deem bowel cancer as an emergency so he was on a waiting list, could you imagine he had waited .. could have spread.

And my aunty has had sever back problem where she hasnt been able to walk for 3 years now. She lives in brisbane. She just got her operation last week after a 3 year waiting list. Great public system we have!!!

Anyway as alot people say. wouldnt be without it.
Health it the most IMPORTANT thing in our lifes, be healthy keep your kids healthy.

And to me, i rather not have other luxury items like internet or foxtel etc if i cuoldnt afford health fund I would make sure i COULD afford it and drop other things off instead.
Because the end of the day your health is the most important thing in life.

I rather be safe, and know no matter what happens i will not have to wait nor will my children because the public system is crap.

We pay $120.50 per fortnight with the Commonwealth Bank (Top Extras). We won't need to pay any extra when kids come along. We use it a lot as well - the dentist twice a year, both of us wear glasses, and I've had surgery a couple of times. It's worth it for peace of mind.

We are with HCF and pay approx $200 per month for private cover and extras.
I completely agree with others that I would hate it if either myself or dh or one of the boys was diagnosed with something, and then told that it is not urgent and we'd have to wait for years for surgery.
Life is precious as it is.
