You only give panadol after the needles and only if they appear to be in pain or unsettled. If you give panadol before the needles it can interfer with the immunisation that they are given.

Our doctor told us to give it to him 1/2hr before the appointment so that it kicks in just before the needle.

I haven't heard of giving panadol before hand affecting the immunisation.

Ring up your doctor's and check with them.

I too have not given panadol prior to the injections - or after for that matter, as there have been no problems with them. I don't really know if they mean to ease the pain of the actual injection by suggesting that you give it half an hour prior, perrywinkle?? but I can't see how that would help if this is the intention.

I think that especialy if you are breastfeeding, I would avoid anything unnecessary orally, as the introduction of anything other than breastmilk interferes with the unique digestion/absorption and other activities of breastmilk. Of course if your baby was miserable and feeling pain or had a temperature, then paracetamol would be, no doubt, warranted! - but you don't know that is going to happen until after the injections!

My bub hasnt had panadol for immunisations so I'm strongly with the wait and see afterwards and even then I'd offer cuddles, bottle, boob or dummy first! But thats just my opinion ;)

Thanks for the advise I think I'll give it to her before hand and see if it helps, with her last lot of needles she had a really high temp so maybe it will help prevent that. I guess its all trial and error if it works fantastic if it doesn't there's no harm done!

It used to be reccommended to give the panadol before immunisation, but not anymore.

ask your maternal and child health nurse just to be sure.

Even when your lo has a high temp after imms, you should try other methods of getting the fever down before giving panadol as using meds to reduce fever can suppress other symptoms that you need to be able to see!

Both of my kids have a severe reaction to imms which usually involves high fever and breathing difficulties ... I find that the panadol is less of a help than stripping them off and giving tepid baths!

Panadol should always be the last resort in my opinion! We over medicate our kids too much!

Hi Zarbz,

A couple of my girlfriends swear by Panadol prior to immunisations. Luckily, my little one (touch wood) hasn't reacted to any needles yet so I decide not to use it.

That said, if your bubba has had a reaction in the past and you want to reduce the risk of it happening again, go for it. Many doctors recommend it and you are only caring for your child - immunisations are big things for a little bubba !

You sound like a caring mum so you do what you think is best, and I bet you're little one will appreciate it !

After my daughter had her needles, she was quite grumpy and the area was sore where she was given the needle, so I gave her panadol then. My doctor said to me to give her panadol after if I thought she needed it.

My mother always told me to take panadol with me and give it to bubs after the needle to prevent a fever.

i decided to wait and see and ds had no side effects at all.

i just take his bottle with me to calm him after the needles and he is fine from then on.

but if there is history of your bub having side effects then I personally would be giving my child a dose of it after the needle.

MJ got her 4month needles today and we waited till after the neddles to give her panadol. I ended up giving her some about 1.5hrs after, only because she would only settle for 5minutes then start screaming again. NO amount of cuddling, soothing or trying to feed (even refused the breast) would calm her.

It kills me to see her like that, but I would rather 1 bad day caused by a needle than to have her get the diseases i'm trying to prevent.
