View Full Version : Pap Smear after Pregnancy - abnormal result
Hi Everyone
DD was born almost 8 weeks ago and I got my pap smear results from my ob/gyn today. He said there was an abnormality found and I have to go back and have some more tests. Has anyone else had a result like this after pregnancy? I am only 24 years old
Thanks

I personally haven't had an abnormal result after pregnancy, but a friend of mine did... She was told the result was possible due to pap smear bring done too soon after pregnancy... She had one done a couple of weeks later and all was fine...
I had a abnormal result just before I found out I was pregnant... Turned out I was pregnant at the time of the smear test and didn't know it... I had another done when DS was about 3 months and all was fine...
Good luck with the next test

I had abnormal cells about 15 years ago, detected by a pap smear test. It was before any pregnancies but if you have been having regular pap tests then this will mean it is a very early detection which is good news. If, and I may be projecting here, it turns out that there are changes in the cells, it usually requires a quick day surgery procedure to remedy it. This is a fairly straightforward procedure and not something to get too worries about. i haven't had a return since. Good luck and PM me if you want to talk more.

After i had dd i had an abnormal result but then i fell pregnant with ds i couldnt get the surgery so had to wait till i had him.I am getting the surgery next week now.
What type of surgery is this that you are talking about?
Hi, I have to get the surgery too. My results came back as CIN2/3 after my OB did a colposcopy and took 2 biopsies from my cervix. I've met with the specialist who will do the surgery and he stressed to me that I had nothing to worry about. It is 100% treatable and he said it's his job to make sure everything is ok. I will have to have the abnormal cells removed by laser or a loop (LLETZ - large loop excision of the transformation zone). You have a general anaesthetic and the procedure depending on the method of removal will take between 15-30mins. I have to stay in the hospital for half a day. He said that I may still have an abnormal pap result later as they check again in 5 and 11 months and then have pap smears every year. In most cases 99.9% you will have a clear pap result within 5 years. This also does not affect your ability to have more children.
One thing that will be an inconvenience if you do have the surgery is that you will have to spend 10 days recovering at least. During this 10 days you can't do heavy housework (vacuuming) or lift anything over 5kg, this means bub! Bub should be passed to you or you should pick him/her up from a sitting position. If you put any strain on your body, you might rupture a clot and will have to go to the Dr again and have it stopped.
Hey, don't worry it sounds pretty full on, but it is treatable!!
Katie, it's called a colposcopy, and it's just like a pap smear, only instead of just taking a scraping, they use a tiny camera to look closely at your cervix. It doesn't feel any different to a regular pap smear, they use a tiny tiny thin wire which i didn't feel at all. You can even watch the screen yourself if you like, have a look at your own cervix, I did.
They may take an extra scraping from the abnormal cells to do a biopsy, and you may feel a tiny sting then, but it's really not bad, like getting a needle. It all comes down to how relaxed you are during your regular pap smears, really. If you cope with those ok without too much discomfort, then these procedures shouldn't be any more uncomfortable than that. Each of my 'surgeries' (really just procedures) took less than 45 minutes, and I was able to work later in the day as well.
I was told by the specialist that these 'abnormalities' or 'changes' in pap test results are so common among young women these days, it's almost to be considered normal. This is exactly what our pap smears are for, to detect these changes BEFORE they become problems.
I have a clean bill of health now, after having some abnormal cells removed about 4 yrs ago. Have to have yearly pap tests now, rather than 2-yrly, just to keep a close eye on things, but so far, no more changes! I hope this eases your mind somewhat. Chin up and good luck :)

Just wanted to add that I had the laser loop surgery also, but I just had a local anaesthetic. I felt a bit light-headed, but was able to go home about 45mins after the surgery ended. I was told to take it easy for 3-4 days, but could still do light duties at work the next day. I guess it depends on the size of the area they're working with.

Not after pregnancy (ive just had a pap so I hope not anyway), but I have before and ended up having to have cells cut out/burnt off. I was at my follow up appt. when I found out I was pregnant. Anyway, its very rare to develop anything serious out of abnormal pap results if you get screened regularly and have treatment if needed.
But I know its very scary as I cried and was very worried when I was told I had stage 2 abnormality and would need surgery. Sometimes they just dont get a proper smear and everything might be fine. Good luck and you will be fine whatever happens. :hugs:
Thanks everyone, its eased my mind!!
