Would this be a wierd thing to do i was thinking of doing photos of newborns at our local hospital going up there 2-3 times a weeks mon wed and fri or something and taking them at a small cost of $10-$15 and putting them on disk for the families, then they can print out what they want when they want.

I thought Hospitals already did that..

When I had my daughter I paid for the package..

When I had my son it was not a package but the announcement in the paper.

But you still got the photo

Yours is cheaper but I don't know if the hospital would let just anyone do it??

we dont have it at our hospital only a person from the paper every now and then
I would get a police check cert and things

A company does it at our hospital I think. I paid quite a substantial price for ours. Perhaps you should ask- it can't hurt right?

The hospital I gave birth in also did them. For me personally its not something I was interested in - I opted for professional shots when our son was 4 weeks old. I looked like poo in the hospital and our son wasnt looking great either so our own photos were adequate. Cant hurt though if your hospital doesnt have anyone that does them.

its a great idea but its too cheap - should be at LEAST $50 per session.

I wouldn't want to put a high price on them for the fact that parents go out and buy all these things for thier bubs and I know for a fact i wouldn't have a large amount of money on me after the birth. I would get pictures of feet and hands with parents and or siblings mother and baby etc ive always had a thing for photos and right now its a thing that im enjoying.
What else would i need to do?

I agree you are charging far too little. Think about your costs and time (DVD, advertising, travel, application for ABN, working with children, taxes). The fact you are giving a cd with all photos and that you are the only one doing it means people will be happy to pay $50. And, it is an option they can say no to you and just take their own. Don't undersell yourself and good luck!

I am pretty sure I paid around $180- for Keiaras birth package and I got a A4 a birth certificate (not a real one, just her name and details of birth) and I got a few little ones... All the same photo though.

With my sons one I didn't get it as they wanted me in the picture too and well I wasn't up to that, but it would have been nice if I were prepared for it, I think thnk charged $50 for that?

I could easily do up certificate type things with details with a photo inserted or even in the background of the photo.
Im going to look into what i need to do abn number police check etc.

Sounds nice. There was one at my hospital and they asked if I'd like them done but nope, because they were too expensive for me (and honestly I wasn't in the mood)

:) if you have a really good quality camera and get some skills, then sure, it's a good idea. I'd maybe start by just calling the hospital and seeing if they'd be interested and what would be their requirements of you.

In that case I think your price range is fine :) if you were a professional I would suggest a higher price range.

Though to start I would offer it for free so you could build a portfolio and gain experience.

I would also suggest getting a decent camera, not just a point and shoot, but a student slr/dslr camera at the very least.

In that case I would call the hospital and ask how you would go about doing it, and what they require of you.

Also, don't be suprised if they ask you to pay them so you can do this, as essentially you would be running a business from their grounds, so there may be something along those lines, too.

:iagree:

My friend does baby photo's at a hospital in Vic. She has to pay the hospital $15 per baby.

Good luck, definately worth looking into

Our hospy offered something along those lines but for us it was not something we were interested in. It seems lots of others are though!

I would think you would be able to charge a little more than you were originally thinking though?! By the time you add in travel, materials, tax and possibly the hospy fee as pp's have suggested you might not be left with anything.

Are you looking at this being more of a hobby/labour of love or would you like to turn it into a viable business?

Yeah more of a hobbie to start with then go from there, If things went ok then i would think of making it into a small business. My friend is going to be calling me shortly after the birth of her 1st bub so i will see how i go with that first, I know 2 of the midwives really well at the hospital so i might speak to them after ive done up a rough copy of what im goign to do and ive got all the information and things i need.

Thank you all for your input if there is anything else that you think i may need to look into please let me know.

When DS was born the hospital didn't have anything like this. Great idea!

At daycare we just paid $20 for school photos on a CD- one colour one black & white & a class collage. I agree that you could charge slightly more.

Its a good idea, but depends if you have ever photographed a newborn before/. Newborns are completely different to photograph than babies, children or anything else.
