After 6 and a half weeks of having my little girl I thought it was about time to post my birth story. It seems a distant memory and like it happened to someone else when I tell it to people. My due date was 20 November 2010, my last OB appt on 8 November I was told she wasnt even engaged.

Saturday the 13th November 2.36am - i woke up to the urge to pee as all pregnant women do, so off to the toliet i went. I remember thinking to myself whilst on the loo, that wow I havent pee'd like this since before I was pregnant, then went back to bed

4.30am - woke again to the urge to pee, as I got up from the bed, I wet myself or so I thought, so off to the loo and again I remember thinking I havent pee'd like this since before I was pregnant. I then started thinking that I couldnt have wet myself as I have never before and it just didnt feel like I had.
I woke DH with a dont panic but i think my waters have broken. I was 39 weeks. At the beginning I didnt feel anything so tried to go back to bed. By 5.30am though I was up as I had period pain and wasnt able to sleep. I was also concerned as I hadnt felt her move for a while.

We hadnt at that stage chosen a name for our baby as yet, so I sat out on the deck at 6am with the baby name book and read and read till i had my short list. By 8.30am I still hadnt felt her move and the pain was getting more intense, so I called the Birth Unit. They told me to have an ice cold glass of water and have a really hot shower and to ring back in an hour. So thats what I did. Called back at 10am as she still hadnt moved and the pain was getting more intense. The Birth Unit told me to come in and they will have a look. They also didnt beleive that this stage that my waters had broken even though I knew they had.

By 11am I was at the Birth Unit and placed into an Assessment room. I had an internal and was 3 cm, to the midwifes surprise my waters had broken.. I knew it!!!.. the contractions where coming in 3's of about 45seconds and then I would have a break for about 5mins. They suggested I go on the drip to regulate them. I said no to give me more time. They had contacted my OB by this stage and he was happy for me to wait an hr and see if my body would regulate them. 3hrs passed and I was still really irregular.. UNO wasnt keeping my mind off them by this stage. So about 2pm they inserted the drip and I started slowly. The drip didnt really do anything so every 30mins they turned it up. By 4.30pm 14hrs after my waters had broken I was still only 3cms. Alot of pacing the halls and squatting hadnt worked. She was also very high up still. They couldnt get a good readng of her heart so they placed the monitors that come on belts around me so that I could still be active.

By 6pm, I was starting to get tired and they hadnt let me eat as I was bring everything up. There was also talk of a c section as she still wasnt coming down. The midwife suggested to aviod this they needed to turn the drip up even more so that the contractions could work in my favour. I was already struggling with the pain and because there was talk of a c section they told me to have an epidural. I was against it at first so they turned the drip up and within 20mins I wasnt coping anymore. My contractions where still coming 3 at a time with only a 2min break in between. The staying still for the epi was the worst as I was having waves of contractions, I even bit my DH who was trying to get my to stay still.

Once they epi was complete, I had to wait the 20mins for it to work!! This is something that people dont tell you. I assumed it was an instant relief.. ahh no its not.. That 20mins was the longest of my life!! The time was 6.30pm at this stage..

By 8pm, I was fully dilated, and I wanted the epi to wear off so i could push. by 8.30pm, I was ready to push and push I did for 1.5hrs, except my little one had bad directions and wasnt coming down the way she was supposed to. She wanted to come out with the top of her head first, therefore was bumping against my pelvis bone and had some coning of the head. I was getting nowhere. They contacted my OB who told them to turn the epi up and he would be in. By midnight my OB arrived and assessed the situation. the epi had worn off again and he worked with me to try pushing again, this time on my back as I was trying to do it on all fours and getting nowhere. At this stage I was exhausted and in so much pain, that i flat out refused to push anymore as I knew I was getting nowhere. I just wanted her out. I remember begging my OB to just get her out. At 12.45am on Sunday 14 November my OB made the decision to use forceps due to her position and my exhaustion. The epi was turned back up and he got me on the gas whilst it took effect. I remember just feeling relief that she was finally going to get out and all i could think about was having a Big Mac!!!

At 1.16am and 21hrs later our daughter Sage Marie was born, the OB used the forceps to rotate her slightly and to get her head out. He then got my DH to deliver the rest of her. I had to be cut but only had a 2nd degree tear with only a few stitches. Her apgar scores where a 6 and then a 9..

Due her check they picked up that she had a clicky left hip so within 48hrs she was fitted for a Pavlik Harness, which she still wears now and is due to get off in 5 weeks time.

Sage is a beautiful little girl who has her moments but we wouldnt change anything.

I am not disappointed that I couldnt push her out as I knew that I wasnt going to be able to at that stage of the labour. I still havent been able to look at the pictures of the birth that my mum took but maybe one day.

Sage weighed 3kgs and was 48cms long with a head circumference of 31cms.

Congratulations. You were a trooper. 21 hours is a long time. I was exhausted after 10th hours with my first. Well done.
I'm sure you're enjoying your wonderful snuggles. You picked a very pretty name.
