View Full Version : Best Cloth Nappy for a newborn?
Hello all you knowledgable ladies **bows down**
I'm planning to use cloth nappies for my bubba (due jan/feb) and I'm trying to decide what I should get to start with. I've had a look at some of the modern cloth options as I'm lucky enough to have a natural baby shop near by (Natures Cradle). My concern is that most of them look so big and bulky for a little newborn.
I was planning to give baby beehinds a go as so many people seem so happy with them, but when I saw them I couldn't imagine them being very comfortable on a tiny new baby. I have also been considering the eenie system.
I'm wondering if it would be better to start off with terry or flannelette flat nappies until bub gets a bit bigger. I'm not worried about folding/pinning etc as I'm pretty proficient with a nappy (I was a very helpful big sister!) and they're so easy to wash and dry.
What do you all think? What is the best cloth nappy for a newborn?

Savs only 10 weeks old and this is what I've done with her so far:
I was given 3 boxes of newborn disposables, we used all them up.. took about 6 weeks by which time she was 4.5kg... then i used flats and the few small fitteds i have, and now shes 5.5kg and BB's dont swim on her anymore and shes starting to fit into medium fuzzi's!
With isobella I used flats until she was about 4 months and weighed about 5.5kg and then put her in fuzzi bunz which she outgrew bout 12 months old and 10.5kg and is now in baby beehinds.... and will be til TT :D

Hi! There's a few different nappy brands that have quite small or newborn sizes, perfect for those first few months. Cherub's Kiss have small ones at really good prices, also Beastly Bumz "small" size is pretty small.
If you're a sewer, you could make some pocket nappies, and make them to the size you want them.

It really comes down to personal choice. I would say that a decent fitted plus cover is a better option than a flat plus cover because the fitted will more likely contain better.
My pick of the lot would be the Tots Bots size 1's snappi-ables. In my opinion, they offer the best fit over the widest range of body types. The cotton version would still be bulkier than compared to a folded down Baby Beehinds but much trimmer than a folded flat. This time 'round I have some bamboozle Tots which are so deliciously soft and trim as well as some custom Ericas and DS's old small sized WeeWuns which are just gorgeous. I did try flannelette flats and muslins for DS but found that he was a big wetter and they just weren't absorbant enough.
If your concern is about the bulkiness of cloth compared to disposables, cloth will never be as trim while offering the same absorbancy. That doesn't mean that bulkiness is a bad thing. Having the legs pushed out with cloth is actually good for developing hips and 'double nappying' was the old remedy to hip dysplasia before braces. You do get used to the extra padding and then seeing/feeling a disposable bottomed baby becomes weird LOL.
Even though I have a stack of newborn and small sizes, I generally don't recommend others stock up on them(especially the expensive ones like AIOs) because babies grow so quickly that they won't get much use out of them. Another option is to try prefolds.

Do the Tots Bots Bamboozles come in a size 1? I've got a couple, but in size 2 (which almost fit now) and until now I've just folded the front down.
TB's Bamboozles are bamboo nappies, and I think they're much trimmer than regular nappies, plus they're so much more absorbent, plus they're soft and so great for babies skin.
http://www.ecobabe.com.au sells bamboozles, that's where I got mine.

that is so true. it feels so weird at night when i put a sposie on my little girl (we are still working on finding the right night nappy) i love her big cloth butt during the day. i used flats on her and sposies until about 3 months ago when i was able to buy some pockets and aio's. (she is 13 months now). we do use the flats at home during the day and when we go out i put a more modern nappy on (generally one of my pockets) i would like to used the fitted and a cover for the next one tho. if you want to save some money at the start - and not buy to many different sized fitteds just use flats for a little while. then use a pocket when bubs gets a bit bigger (love the greenkids) so you can vary the stuffing/absorbancy for your child.
you can always have a go at making some fitteds or pocket nappies (i am as soon as we have moving into our new house). it doesn't seem to be that hard if you know how to use a sewing machine.

Yup :D I've got some stashed away for #2 because I loved the ordinary Tots so much that I thought if it's bamboo it must be nearly perfect LOL. I purchased mine from Elizabeth a www.cleverpants.com.au and she is fabulous to deal with. I've heard that Tots Bots were recalling the snappi-able Bamboozles because they found after about 6 months the snappi was no longer grapping the fabric. They are releasing a new snaps version though.
Thanks for your thoughts everyone.
I have just ordered a "trial pack" from Baby Beehinds so I will get a bamboo nappy, a hemp nappy, a wool cover, a pul cover as well as some boosters and wipes. I thought that might be a good start to try them out when bub arrives. If they work well I'll get more once bub is here, or have a look at some other options. I think I'll also get a couple of packs of terry flats as I'm sure they will come in handy for boosters and/or general cloths if I end up getting more fitteds early on, otherwise if the fitteds just seem too big I'll stick with the flats until bub grows a bit.
Hmmm... I can see how this gets very addictive!
Ooh, I've just been checking out the Tots Bots Bamboozles - I might need to try some of them too! So yummy:p
