Hi all,

Has anyone had any problems with dummies? I just found my 9 month old with the entire dummy in her mouth. :(

I normally use tommee tippee or heinze ones, but the one time I did use the happy baby one DS2 just bit straight through it.
Thanks for letting us know!

There has been rather a lot of publicity about that exact issue with dummies lately. One of the NUK ranges was pulled off the shelves for the same reason.

You can read more about it here. (http://www.choice.com.au/viewArticle.aspx?id=103865&catId=100512&tid=100008&p=1&title=Dummy+failures)

My DD uses the Heinz ones, we haven't had any problems

My DD was given a Happy Baby dummy in the hospy, even though they hadn't asked & despite the fact that we had bought Avent ones for her to use but she loved it, after awhile I changed to TOmmee Tippee, not sure why but she seemed to like those just as much. Good luck.

Ciao,

My babay girl uses Happy Baby and i have found that they do deteriorate quicker than other brands (such as tommee tippee) and go "flat" but for some reason they are her fave's so i keep getting them. I check them every single time i give them to her because i am worried about them coming off into her mouth....how scary!!!

My baby uses the Happy Baby dummies and so far I haven't had a problem - she uses a size larger than specified but it looks like the actual cover part (not the teat) is the same size regardless - is this what your 9 month old was able to get into her mouth?! It looks quite large but scary! Will definately have to keep an eye on the dummy...

my ds used to use happy baby dummies.... i found that as a new born they were fantastic, but as he got older (and he got teeth) they just seemed to pop - like lots of little rubber bits in his mouth- now we use the tommee tippie cherry shapped ones and they are fantastic :)

Hi, I have posted on this website before, I am a representative of Simes Australia, the Australian Distributor of NUK Dummies. Faemi had mentioned that NUK Dummies had been recalled, however I would like to draw to your attention that this was actually not the case and you will find NUK Dummies are still being sold throughout Australia.

See below a copy of the press release that we sent out in response to the Choice article.

This issue was also discussed in the "Safety Issues" forum and carries a little more detail.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NUK Soothers - Safe by World Standards

Adelaide, 06 June 2006

A recent ill-considered report by Choice magazine unfairly branded NUK soothers as ‘unsafe’. Choice published the report on its web site (31/05/06) after conducting tests on 12 soothers. They referred to 6 of the 12 soothers tested, including 3 NUK soothers, as ‘unsafe’. This claim is both misleading and irresponsible, as the tests Choice conducted were carried out according to a standard last updated in 1991 which has no binding effect in any Australian State or Territory.

NUK soothers are manufactured in Germany, and as such they comply with the stringent mandatory European Standard EN 1400, which is reviewed regularly (approved July 2002). The European Standard is prepared and published by CEN (the European Committee for Standardisation) based in Brussels. CEN members are the national standards bodies of Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

NUK has over 50 years of experience in the baby care business and NUK soothers have been sold in Australia for almost 40 years. MAPA, the manufacturer of NUK products, has always prided itself on the safety of its products and adheres to the strictest safety and quality control tests. Millions of NUK soothers are sold around the world every year and there has never been an incident reported that resulted in a serious injury to a baby. We would like to take this opportunity to reassure parents that they should feel secure in the knowledge that under normal use NUK soothers are indeed completely safe.

Hi there, never had any problems here just curious what size dummy was your bub using?

Hi, she had a large (9+ months) dummy. It should be the right size for her.

Re: Nuk dummies, DS2 got one the entire way in his mouth, nothing serious happened because I saw him do it, but I threw it in the bin straight away and I would never buy another one.

Re: Nuk dummies, DS2 got one the entire way in his mouth, nothing serious happened because I saw him do it, but I threw it in the bin straight away and I would never buy another one.

this has happened to a few bubhubbers, and the reply from NUK seems to be that they should have been using the next size up, regardless of whether the baby was in the proper NUK size or not (I think the issue was a 0-6mo one on a 6 month baby, and Nuk suggested they should have used the 6-12mo )
So while they haven't been recalled, they won't be going into my son's mouth! (we got a free one as a sample in the Bounty Bag. Went straight to the bin)

Exactly Seekrit, I think they believe because there have been no serious problems that there isn't a problem. Bad business pracitse if you ask me.

I used Happy baby with DS2  I dont like them at all as i found that he ripped the teat part off and lucky i happen to go into his room at the time and found the dummy in two parts before he decided to swallow it. Silly me went and bought another one and few days later he shoved the whole dummy in his mouth (it was the correct size). So IMO Happy baby are just that, Cheep and nasty.

I've used Nuk with DS1,DD1 and still using Nuk with DD2 and i've never had a problem with them. DS1 put one entirely in his mouth but he was able to get it out himself without it getting stuck.

This sort of thing can happen with any dummy you buy, thats the chance you have to take.. but the way i see it is, Nuk is easily retrievable without causing damage.. JMO.

We used Happy Baby dummies for DD and didn't have any problems with them.
I used an Avent to start with, but found when cleaning them in Milton, liquid got inside the bubble, so they went in the bin.

If the happy Baby dummy goes flat (and it's doesn't have a hole in it), take off the 'handle' bit (takes some effort) and pop out the platic plug. Dummy will reinflate. Then put back together. Don't know why they do this, but threw out a few before I learned this trick.

My DD loves her Happy baby dummy and for $3.93 for 3 dummies from Big W I can't complain even if it does go flat within a few weeks. My DD probably goes through 1 dummy a month so for that price I'm happy with it. I haven't had it break yet and my DD chews on it as well - she has 2 sharp bottom teeth and likes to pull and yank with the dummy with it and it has taken the beating rather well.

I think babies are all different and if you find a certain brand that your baby likes then just stick with it.
