How do you tackle your childs excema symptoms???

As I mentioned in another post ds excema seems to be getting worse and worse:thumbsdown: Up until recently we were handling it quite well by........
showering only every second or third day using castile soap just on the essential areas, i.e. not lathering up his whole body.
using elidel cream
moisturising his skin morning and night with olive oil (later replaced by a combination of almond, jojoba and roman chamomile oils).

Now i feel like nothing I am doing is making any difference. It seems we have been dealing with a continual 'flare up' for a couple of months:banghead: :banghead: It used to just be on his face, but now covers nearly his whole body and nothing has changed in his diet or environment. It is constantly on my mind and I feel really helpless:crying:

I was told by a naturopath at a health food shop to give him flaxseed oil internally......does anyone else do this? Was it helpful?

So, what is your success story??????

It's a bloody tuff job isn't it!! Here's my list of creams/treatments that we've tried...I'm finding that what works for some folks doesn't work for others so I'm trying everything I can find....

Works for us:
- Sudocrem (nappy rash cream)
- Huggies lotion for sensitive skin (just on face and neck-doesn't work on backs of his legs)
- Olive oil - two or so tablespoons in the bath water and applied directly onto skin as well
- Emu oil - I use the Emu Spirit brand (www.emuspirit.com (http://www.emuspirit.com) for more info) in bath water and directly onto skin
- Dermaveen Moisturing lotion
- Dermaveen shower and bath oil (twice a week max)
- Dermaveen oatmeal shampoo
- OMO sensitive wash powder

Didn't work for us:
- Gaia baby lotion - a friend recommends the baby cream as it's thicker
- Dermaveen eczema cream
- Dermaveen soap free wash

Working on atm::fingerscrossed:
- Graham's calendua cream - using this with emu oil applying bucketloads after nappy changes
- Huggies bath wash for sensitive skin (so far so good touch wood)

Next list of products on the agenda:
- Evening primrose oil applied directly onto skin - bust open tablets and apply oil
- QV bath oil and creams

Bath habits - daily as DS is a hot bub and gets smelly, but I try to keep the water on the cooler side of warm. Wash his hair once a week if I remember

What we've changed:
- taken away toys, bibs, clothing, cot blankets/rugs, even my clothing - anything with polyester even poly-cotton combinations
- stay off the grass
- trying to keep him cool at all times - finding that when he overheats or works up a sweat he gets terribly itchy

I can't honestly say that I've found a miracle product that keeps it at bay, and seeing I'm anti-steriod creams, I'm trying my best to find something that works. As someone with eczema told me.....it's not about finding a cure, it's about controlling the symptoms. I don't think we're controlling it just yet, but it ain't over til the fat lady sings.....

Good luck!! :o

Well, I don't have a child yet but the only thing I've found that works on my eczema so far is oatmeal baths and then a light moisturiser. The oatmeal really helps with the itch.
I just ordered a 1kg tub of dermaveens colloidal oatmeal for the bath, hopefully its good :)

I use Body Shop products for my son's eczema. I use their Milk bath in his baths and rub the Hemp hand protector and body butters into any affected areas. It has been working for us for over a year now.

My first son had first signs of eczema at around 2 months old. It started on his face and then the backs of his legs, on his wrists and arms. It was horrible. I took him to the doctor who refered me to the childrens hospital. I tried all the creams but none of them really worked that well. They showed me how to dress the areas with wet bandages after applying creams etc. I had allergy tests done which showed up nothing.
He is now 4 and from about 2 and a half years old it has all cleared up on its own. He still gets small spots of it. I know that it wasnt a bad case of eczema (and Ive seen bad cases) his was nothing compared to some but I know how horrible it was to deal with because I couldn't take away his pain.
So I hope you find something that helps your little one or someone can suggest something that works. It is such a common skin problem with bubbies these days.

I found that flaxseed oil worked with my LO. I gave her a spoonful in her juice twice a day and more often during a flareup. You could also try fish oil, so I have been told.

I know how frustrating this can be, we went through almost every cream on the market in Australia before resorting to cortisone and Elidel, both worked a treat. I also tried to keep her really moisturised at every opportunity. I did find that a product called Medihoney Eczema cream worked really well when lathered on. I used to lather on the moisturiser then wet a clean chux cloth and wrap it around her constantly during night and day when it was at it's worst when LO was around 14months to 30 months, we even sent her to daycare wrapped up.

I have a friend who is a natural therapist and her first answer to my questions about this was always to treat it from the inside, ie with fish and flaxseed oil!

Good luck with it!

The hemp body butter worked for us too-smelled nice, didn't sting broken skin, was thick & moisturising without being greasy:)

DD#2 had it quite badly, and we fixed that by going organic foodwise, and changing to natural cleaning products including for the laundry.

For DS, we are using (sparingly) pure olive oil soap from Gooramadda Olives in NE Victoria (no more than 2 baths per week), together with the Eczema cream and Eczema mixture from Dartnell's compounding Pharmacy in Surrey Hills (Vic), who also instructed me to take 6000mg of fish oil per day so he gets it in the breastmilk . His skin has gone from "OMG, what do I do?" to "He has eczema?? You're kidding!". He had eczema much more severely than DD#2. The Dartnell's cream and mixture are only available from the shop itself, but they will post it.

I also bought him Pure Baby organic cotton singlets and tops.

The MCHN gave me Dermaveen samples for DS, and the poor little kid flinched and cried each time when I applied the cream - I figured it must have been stinging, so I gave up on it after a few days.
