Ds had an allergic reaction to peanut butter today. It came as a shock, as I don't have any allergies and neither does dd, and he has had peanut butter once before when he stole a bit of his sisters toast, and he was fine so I assumed he was ok with it.
Gave him a pb sandwich and about half an hour after I noticed he had a bit of red around his mouth and his eyes were watery, red and itchy. Kept an eye on him and tried to put him down for a sleep, he fell asleep for about 20 mins then woke up crying, lots of mucous and his eyes and face were all puffy, this was me :freakingout:
Called an ambo for him as I don't have a car to be able to take him to emergancy, thought maybe I had over reacted but they said I did the right thing as it could have turned bad, luckily his airways stayed clear but it was definitely a reaction to the peanut butter, we went to emergancy to be observed for a couple of hours but he is fine now. No peanuts in this household from now on though, next time it could be worse. This is all new to me, have never dealt with any allergies in my family before.

Dd is going to be dissapointed, she loves her peanut butter! But just not worth the risk. I'm think I will get him to have a skin prick test to see if he has any others.
Oh wow, how scary! I never really thought twice about giving my DS peanut butter, will have to be more careful with #2!
Glad to hear he is ok now...

What about cashew butter. You can get it at supermarkets in the health food isle.
I am glad your ds is going ok. The first time ds had an anaphalactic reation i was also going crazy. I was stuck on a train half an hour from the hospital though. I swear i have never ran so fast from the train station to the wch before.

Oh my gosh how scary for you!!!
I've been contemplating trying my DS on PB soon, but after reading this I think I might leave him a bit longer yet.
I gave him a taste of my cookie dough I was baking today which had raw egg in it, and I was a bit scared doing that, but he doesn't seem to have had any issues thank goodness.
:hugs:
Oh how scary, I am so glad that he is ok now.
CazGotHam: I introduced PB to my DS very slowly before giving him a sandwich and he is fine now. What I did was less than 1/4 teaspoon on day 1, 1/4 teaspoon on day 2, etc for a few days and then moved onto spreading it onto 1/2 slice of bread etc.
I was going to hold it off for awhile longer, but I wanted to know if he could handle it as he stays at my mums and MIL's once per week. (In case they thought it was ok and gave him some).
Kaikai- i would defintly get a skin prick test done my DS has allergies to other things so we stayed away from nuts just to be safe and thank goodness coz he acme back really back for cashews and peanuts. the test doesnt hurt them (thts wat i was worried bout)
hope ur DS is ok and u never have a scare like tht again
off topic but i made quiche for my FDC kids today and i spent the whole lunch time in panic attacks wat if one of the opther kids didnt wash ther hands properly or wat if he grabbed some of there lunch so i had his epi pen in my hand most of lunch tiome :(
How scary! Glad he is ok now though :hugs:
Just be wary of packaged stuff coz alot of them can contain traces of nuts.

How scary for you! Get him into a immunologist asap. Im waiting for my appointment in May 2011. There is a 6 month waiting list for where I am! My DS had an allergic reaction not long ago to an organic fruit muesli, his bottom lip swelled up and I panicked as well.

If he's had a reaction to PB I wouldn't attempt cashew butter as cashews are a high allergen nut also. There is a spread called 'freenut butter' available in the health food isle of the supermarket. It looks and tastes like PB but is made from sunflower seeds in a nut free factory. The concern though is to make sure you educate the kids that it is NOT PB and that eating PB is extremely dangerous. I wouldn't give it to your DS as it may just confuse him about what he is and isn't allowed to eat, but it could mean that your DD can safely enjoy a 'PB' sandwich at no risk to your DS.
My nephew is anaphylactic to peanuts & my DS2 wad diagnosed anaphylactic to them at 12 months but by 18 months had outgrown it. Apparently this can sometimes happen as they build their immunity. Pretty rare to outgrow a nut allergy though.
There is lots of info out there and good labelling on food now days. Good luck with it all xx

How scarey for you, I'm glad it turned out OK. This happened my friends dd as well, she touched it to her lips, which immediately swelled up like bananas. Super-lucky she didn't swallow it because it would have been game over, the hospy said.

Re this, dd1's allergist told us that if you give a child a taste of peanut butter, you should keep giving it, because if you give it once off and then stop, they are more likely to develop an allergy.
Skin prick tests are worth doing because they can measure the reaction and tell you over time if it is reducing.
So glad your little one is safe
