Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any advice... my 4.5 month old DD is bottle fed and she has always been somewhat of a fussy eater.

Sometimes she will be feeding and them stop and scream on the bottle. When she is feeding, her tummy makes grumbly noises (kind of like when you haven't eaten in a long time and your tummy grumbles when you get something into your tummy). Sometimes the grumbles won't bother her, but usually she will just scream and scream.

Because she isn't eating much I have been giving her Farex and pumpkin, which she likes, but she is starting to wake in the evening and I think it has to do with the solids.

I definitely think she isn't eating enough. She is 4.5 months and only weighs 6 kilos so I worry that she isn't getting enough.

Can anyone offer advice/suggestions as to why DD's tummy could be grumbling so much when she feeds and why she might be screaming on the bottle??

my ds used to have the grumbly tummy happening alot aswell, i mentioned it to the CHN but he rather rude response was that i wasnt feeding him enough! (he too didnt gain much weight!)
he started out as a larger bub 4.1kg but now at 9mths i doubt hes much more than 8kg (if that!)
we never did find a solution to the problem.
although i did feed him a lot closer for awhile (like every 2hrs, 3 at most!) he practically never drank all of the bottles, but he did start sleeping thru the night! i dont remember when the grumbly tummy stopped tho sorry.

perhaps you could try giving an extra one or two smaller feeds.:fingerscrossed:

Charlie'sMum.. have you looked into reflux? My DD had it, can't remember if her tummy grumbled, but the screaming while being fed and screaming generally sounds familiar? Does she burp well for you? Does she sick up lots, my DD had the power spews down to a fine art.

Neeky - I think I will make a few smaller bottles to give her in between her main feeds and see if that helps (if she will take them!).

Mousebrown - DD is a good burper and she isn't a big vomiter. She does have a few chuck ups. Do you have to burp your DD regularly during feeds? Because I read that if you stop and burp them half way through, it might help with the wind. I might also try that. Do you feed your DD lying down or sitting up?

i try to feed ds at an angle so hes not flat on his back (unless he is in his pram feeding himslef) but not upright either.
and i stopped to burp him about half way thru ( some people say feed for 5mins then burp for 5mins, but bubbs generally had his bottle done in about 5 mins and if i ever took it off him for that long he screamed more and more just making his wind worse)
we also tried wind drops, infacol worked best for aiden, and warm water. but there are plenty of other options as well.
perhaps talk to a gp or chn if things dont get much better.

good luck :fingerscrossed: things get better!

DD2 was exactly like that but also had mucasy poops and vomited often, we found out she was lactose intolerant adn has been great since starting on lactose free formula.
I'd talk tou your health nurse or Dr about it before trying anything.

Jake's belly grumbled all the time when I gave him his bottle, and he often stopped to let out a big scream. The nurse said he may be drinking too fast and/or gulping too much. We recently changed him over to Anti-reflux formula, and now he's hungry less often, he doesn't vomit, and his wind is not a problem.

We had to stop and burp throughout the feed. If your DD brings up wind easily, maybe try and burp a couple of times through the feed. As bubbles said, she might be gulping air as she feeds.

i didnt even think of that, my son went onto a soy formula and i think it stopped a bit after that.... so perhaps that was the solution. (even tho we were told by the stupid chn that tryin the soy or lactose free formulas wouldnt help our bubs!!):banghead:
