Hi all. My DS was born on Monday 20.12.2010 @ 4:49pm emergency csec due to prrom & chorio. He was 30.1 weeks and managed to breathe on his own for a while, he is now on Cpap pressure only, and doing quite well.

I would love to hear anyone elses NICU stories and how long did your baby stay in for? I know they say edd will be approximate discharge date, but am hopeful he can come home a little earlier as his edd was 26.2.2011.

Thanks
Kate

There are lots of variables as to when they come home, but to be safe they mainly say around the due date. If they are feeding well and putting on weight then usually between 38-40weeks gestation I would say.

Congrats on you bub!

My bub was born at 28 weeks and came home at 38 weeks gestation on an early discharge program. She was discharged with the NGT as she had lots of problems with feeding and was only on three suck feeds a day when she was discharged.

Discharge time varies for every baby, depending on how well they are feeding, oxygen requirements etc but yep, they say around the due date. Even when bubs was home we weren't meant to have anyone over or leave the house with her until she had passed her due date.

Good luck, I hope you and bub have a smooth journey through the NICU.

congrats and I hope bubs has a smooth ride and is home soon
:hugs:

DS1 was 35wks and came home on his due date
(5wks later we where allowed to leave on home leave but had to go back every 2nd day
for a weigh in and check up we did this for a week before he was discharged)

DS2 was 32wks and came home at 6wks old
he was tube free for 24hrs before he was able to come home

once there breathing, feeding, gaining weight all on there own
they are usually able to come home soon after that

Congratulations on the birth of your son, and sorry that he is in NICU. It must be very distressing for you.
I had twin boys in June this year at 25+6 weeks gestation. It was by far the hardest thing I have been through, but I now have two healthy big boys at home with me. Mine came home a week apart, one at 38 weeks corrected and one at 39 weeks. So both home by due date. Every NICU journey is different and it is hard not to compare your baby with others.
I am happy to share more of my NICU journey if you like, either here or feel free to pm me. My twins were 780g and 852g, now weighing 5.6 & 5.1kg!
I hope your stay in the NICU is short and uneventful!

7 weeks, trio were born at 28+3 weeks & discharged at 35+3 weeks. Their stay was really easy, out of level 3 on day 7 & 10, CPAP for 3 & 5 days. Full suck feeds at 33 weeks.

Every bub is different & has a different road ahead of them. Discharge before EDD is a bonus.

DS1 30+1wks 1.5kg discharged at 6 weeks old, 2.09kg. Ventilated for a few days, CPAP on and off for 3 weeks. Had been suck feeding for 24 hours, last apnoea was over 24 hours and he was gaining weight. The only reason we were discharged was because I pushed it and had my mum and DPs dad stay with us to help out.

DS2 34+3wks 3.09kg discharged at 9 days old, 3kg. Ventilated and CPAP for 24 hours. Had been suck feeding for four days, no apnoea or anything only issue was jaundiced.

Sounds like your bub is doing really well....yay on breathing air :D
I hope you have a smooth journey and you are together as a family very soon.

My DS3 was born at 36 we were air lifted to a bigger hospital and spent 10 days in the nursery and came home at 37+4
DD2 was born at 35+1 and spent just 6 days in hospital.
DD3 was born at 28+1 weeks and spent 63 days in the nursery so came home at 37+1....she spent 24 hrs on vent and 6 weeks on CPAP.
Finally DS4 was born at 25 weeks and spent 101 days in the nursery...he came home at 39+4 days...he was ventilated for 3 weeks and CPAP for 10 weeks...off for a few days and back on for another week....I didn't get to hold him for a very long 3 weeks.

Each bubs journey is very unique...but they are very strong little people.

My Dd was born at 28+5weeks and she spent 4weeks in level 3 nicu, 2 weeks in level 2 then transferred to a different hospital with lower level of level 2 nicu.

She never had anything for breathing and just needed to put on weight.
Her edd was 14th January. She came home 23rd December.

Good luck and I hope your DS is home with you soon.
