Hi

My bubba is 8 months old.

We have been trying her with solids over the last 4 months.

Over the last month we have been giving her solids once a day as this is all she will tolerate. An attempt at a second meal results in her pressing her lips together and refusing the spoon.

The solids we are offering is rice cereal. She will quite happily take it in the bottle but will only take 5-6 mouthfuls from a spoon.

She is following the growth chart and is otherwise developing well.

Large pieces of food she will put in her mouth but will suck out the juice and spit out any chunks.

We have tried solids before the bottle - she ends up screaming for her bottle.
We have tried them in the middle of the feed - again she gets upset.
At the end of the feed she will only take 5-6 spoonfuls.

Any suggestions???

until 12 mths bubs get their nutritional needs met from milk, so just relax and have fun with introducing foods to your bubba.

you don't have to start with rice cereal, it's pretty bland which is prolly why it's a good first food, but maybe bubs just doesn't like it. you could try making some home made mashed veg or fruit. just offer tastes to bub, let them play and have their own spoon or mush it with their hands. it's ok if it isn't being eaten, just offer and let bubs experiment with the different tastse and textures that solids offer.

perhaps try offerring the solids at a seperate time of day from the bottles all together. 20 min before or after so that she's not too hungry or too full. it's not really about the eating too much any way yet, give her lots of oppurtunities to just enjoy her new mealtimes and gradually she will start to actually want to eat it.

(my first was not interested until 9mths, 2nd ready at 6mths, 3rd at 8mths, they are all different:) )

Dear Seejay Elle,

Given your bub is now 8 months old and you have been trying solids for 4 months, it is a good idea to increase the variety of tastes she is having. Introduce her to other pureed foods such as yogurts, custards, fruit and vegetable purees.

A change in taste may be enough to spark her interest in eating further. It is probably best to increase her range of tastes before changing the textures that you give her. If she is interested in feeding herself, however, some soft finger foods you can try include cubes of well cooked vegetables, tinned fruit and soft cheese sticks.

It does not sound out of the ordinary that she is taking 5-6 spoonfuls after a bottle – she is probably full by that point. To increase her interest and hunger for solids, and to begin to achieve a wider nutritional intake, talk to your doctor or child health nurse about reducing the amount of formula your bub has each day.
