View Full Version : Reaction to bandaids/elastoplast stuff, help?
DD appears to have had a reaction to an elastoplast (sp?) that I'd put on her elbow last thursday. She has had it off since I noticed it looking a bit red on saturday but now its quite raised and pimply.
So I'm assuming this is a reaction to the adhesive. Does this mean that this will happen with all of those type things or is there a certain type of these band aids that are less reactive? Is there something else I can use in future is what I am asking in a long way lol
TIA

hi, i have the same problem with elastoplast/band aids, (and bandages) I find that elastoplast is the worst and has quite strong adhesive. you can get sensitive band aids which are clear, i find them the best. Hope that helps :)

It is very normal for that to happen, especially if the plaster is on that long. I'd say 5 days is a bit too long to have a plaster on one place. If I have something I want to cover with a plaster I make sure I change the position of it every day or 2. Otherwise I get the rash like you described. So yeah, don't leave it on one spot too long! :)
Hi,
I too am allergic to Elastoplast. In my case it is all medical tapes (a strapped ankle for netball resulted in a trip to emergency as the tape had literally burnt my skin). I had an epidural five months ago and you can still are clear as day where the epidural was taped to my back!!!
I am ok with plastic band aids only - I have found the fabric ones all have that adhesive. My Physio has attempted to strap with with stuff in between the tape and my skin and I still had a reaction so be mindful if anyone tells you it will be fine with the stuff in between!
I have also been warned by my allergist that each reaction will get worse so I recommend you be very careful with your RD.
LG, sorry I should have clarified. I put it on thursday arvo. Put a clean one on friday (only did that as it was all weepy and she kept touching it) and it came off on saturday morning, so really not that long at all. But you're right, should have thought to change the possie when I changed it.
Thanks munchkin and Juzz. She has only really had the regular type kids bandaids a couple of times so I'd never come accross this before. Is it usual to have just the redness and a few days later (like from saturday to tuesday) for all the dots to come out?
The redness and dots (& itchiness) sounds like how my reaction used to be, but now it gets much worse very quickly (as mentioned it burnt my skin!)
Interestingly there is a link between an allergy to the Elastoplast adhesive and mangoes - sounds ridiculous but is true according to my doc (& definitely true in my case!)

Wow, that is interesting. I have two in the fridge because I love them but she won't touch them which I'm thinking now is a good thing!
Thanks so much for your help

my daughter has that too. please be careful at the dentists even, they wear different gloves for my lil girl.
also after needles the tape flares my dd up.
and even sensitive bandaids are a no go!

That is really scary, do you know the name of the gloves they have to use? Is it a certain chemical that she reacts to? Eeeek, what happened when you discovered this?
DD never flared from the tape after her immunisations but will watch for that at her four year old needles.
Oh and mumma does your little girl have reactions to other things too? And what do you use instead of band aids?
Thanks again :)

the get you to fill out a form on allergies prior to going in so it was noted from day1. thankfully i havent found out what would happen but she's flared up since very young with needles. i'd just hold cotton wool over her arms/legs for a minute or so.
she had large welts underneath the tape. and again with bandaids she kept complaining it was sore but i thought she meant the actual cut.. until it spread past the bandaid within an hour.. ouchie. i felt so bad :(
she also reacts has slight reactions to acidic foods, tomatoes etc. but its getting better. fleas & dustmites are a big one. and flares up SO much with animals - again probably fleas.
as for what to use instead of bandaids.. we use nothing :) fresh air on sores help them heal quicker :)
hope this helps :)

Flare ups to tape, gloves, acidic fruits etc.. you all sound as though you are describing my latex allergy! Tape has latex in and gives me a reaction like a red burn too. It used to be just red and dots, now its increased. As another poster said, the more contact you have with your allergy (if it's latex, i don't know about others) the more sensitive you become. Try to avoid the bandaids! You need to book her in for allergy testing I would say, as waiting lists can be as long as 6 months sometimes, so it is better to just know what she is allergic to rather than leaving it until she has a big reaction.
Alternative to tape I use.. I just get a cotton bud and plain sticky tape. This seems to work for me. medical tape doesn't. You can also get latex free band aides if this is what it turns out to be.. and latex free first aid kits.
I guess you would really just have to get her tested to be sure!
Cheerio i am pretty sure the gloves Mumma is referring to is Latex free gloves as highlighted by Mlbourne Mummy. Iforgot to mention the latex bit! Most medical professionals have latex and latex free gloves in their clinic so just highlight you think she has a latex allergy and they will use the other gloves.

I react to the plastic type bandaids more than the others.
The normal fabric one's are ok for a short period. And I seem to be better with the sensitive white elastoplast bandaids. I have had broken toes a number of times and I'm fine with the white thin paperish tape. They also use it with a cotton ball instead of a bandaid when I get my blood tests.
Just don't come near me with that strong plastic tape stuff! I was in hospital last month and that plastic white tape they use after blood tests left me in a mess.
my dd cant have any forms of band-aids for this reason!
but the latex free ones that are hyperallergenic are the best ones that we have tried with dd...
we tend to just use gauze now if she needs it... or leave it to the fresh air!
good luck!!!
Thanks very much for all your info. So glad you all said about the gloves and other things!
I usually avoid bandaids anyway but this was a deep bleedy kinda graze which was going everywhere so had to cover it with something. Next time I'll try cotton wool until it settles and give them a miss all together.
Thanks again :xmas:
