Hi

My bubs is 13months and is refusing to eat, I have tried all her usual favourites and tried new things as well but she is still not eating. She does eat porridge so she is having that for breakfast and dinner most of the time but is still fussy with eating it.
Any ideas on helping the situation. It has only been about a week and half but I have recently weened her off the breast and she is having so good because she is not keen on cows milk.

Thanks

Dear Emymygirl,

As hard as it may be, try not to become too anxious about the situation – or at least don’t let your bub see that she has you worried. This refusal may be part of a readjustment following weaning, your daughter may be unwell, or she may be learning the early power and self-assertion that comes with food refusal.

Avoid making changes to the porridge, such as adding other foods or taking it off the menu, if this is the only food she is definitely eating (if only just!), as she may start to refuse that too.

At other meal times, give her small amounts of up to 3 different foods to choose from. It may be a good idea to offer her finger foods so that she can feed herself. See the reply to “Finger foods?” in this Fussy Eaters section for some ideas. Try to keep mealtimes as calm and unemotional as possible, and where practical, feed your daughter at your mealtimes.

If your daughter does not begin to eat again soon, see your doctor.
