View Full Version : Sore 2nd Year Molar or Sore Tongue?

I know this sounds like a strange title for a thread but I can't figure out what's going on with my DS' behaviour over the past week or so.

I thought it started as teething and I can see that the last top right 2nd year molar has broken through the gum but isn't fully through like the other three but he's touching his tongue a lot and saying "ouchie". A few days ago I saw a couple of little pimple looking things on one side of his tongue but they've now gone and his tongue looks fine but he keeps touching it, sticking it out and crying occasionally if something's in his mouth that bothers him.

The tricky thing is there's no rhyme or reason to it because I put Bonjela on the tooth the other night when I thought it was teething and I don't think it touched his tongue but he went beserk and seemed to have hurt him (although given that it's a numbing agent, I don't know how this could be). He's cranky and clingy more than usual and has been a little more tired than normal but he's also pretty happy and doesn't have a temperature. A MHN suggested some Daktarin oral gel and I put that on a couple of times and that's when the dots seemed to disappear but haven't reused it since.

He's had foot and mouth so I know what that looks like and it's not that. The only other thing I thought is that perhaps it's a mouth ulcer (I get a lot of those) but I can't see that either. I'm going to take him to the GP after Christmas if he's still touching it because we need a referral for his recurrent ear infections too so maybe it's connected?

Any ideas from anyone out there would be much appreciated. Thank you

:hugs: is it better yet? It could be his ears or even his tonsils too

Thanks for your concern, I appreciate it!!

He's complaining much less about his tongue although he does keep intermittently touching it and saying "ouchie".

I took him to the DR on Monday and got him thoroughly checked out and she couldn't see anything on his tongue or mouth in general (as well as she could see while he squirmed!!). She thought he might have had foot & mouth but as he's had it once already, he can't get it back apparently (& he had no blisters anywhere).

She checked his ears and said that while he didn't have an ear infection, he did have 2 quite red, sore looking ears so that's probably a lot of his problem. He doesn't have a temperature and his chest and back all sound clear.

I started giving him Nurofen on a full tummy before bed the last 2 nights and he's been terrific (no night waking) and much happier during the day too. He's quite tired, but I think the majority of it is the one last massive molar that's not all the way through yet. We're certainly better than we were last week.

Thanks for checking in with me, I really appreciate it:)
