Hi there,
I have very recently introduced rice cereal to my four month old daughter, following her night breastfeed. How do I continue to introduce solids from now and when or how should I wean her off the breast? At the moment I am happy breastfeeding however I am not sure how to fit the breastfeeding in with solids?
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Dear GC Mum,

As your daughter is only 4 months old, I would continue to offer this once a day and very gradually build it up to 2 tablespoons twice a day. See my reply under ‘Fussy Eaters’ regarding introducing new foods and the role of solids for infants. Breastmilk or formula should form your baby’s primary intake at this age – solids are really just for tastes and should not affect or replace your bub’s breastfeeds.

If you want to increase the variety of tastes you are giving your little one, try pureed fruits and vegetables next. Make them as smooth as possible, because it is unlikely your baby will tolerate lumps at this age. Introduce just one new food at a time as a way of monitoring for any food allergies or intolerances your bub may have.
