View Full Version : Do Your Kids Share a Room?
I am curious how you have your rooms set up with more than one child in the equation.
I have an 11 month old who is used to co-sleeping and I want to make a transition. My 2.5 year old is sleeping with us, but cracks it every time the baby makes a noise. I am thinking they will have to sleep separately for a couple of months for sleep training.
What works for you? Do you have any advice or experiences you could share?
Thanks for your thoughts! :crib: :familybed1:
I have a 9yr, 7yr, 4yr, 22mo sharing a room. The three children go to bed first. Then I put the baby to bed later when she settles.
my 2 share a room 4&2 i waited till dd2 was about 1 before i moved her in with dd1
My children dont share a room but before i had DS i said to DH that if we had another girl then they would be sharing a room as i think it makes a special bond between them as well
I shared a room growing up & me & my sister are best friends because of it..sure we had petty little fights but thats siblings for u haha
My two share a room and have done so for about 8 months. It took a couple of weeks for them to get used to each others noises but now they are brilliant. Also, they are now having the same day nap which makes it SOOOO much simpler. I love that they have such a great time in their - we can hear them giggling away which is lovely. The only downside is that sometimes one wakes the other up in the morning. But oddly, they never wake each other up at night?
I really recommend it; it brings siblings closer together at this young age. :hugs:
I figure they'll probably want their own space eventually so while they are little and being different sexes doesn't bother them I'll take advantage of it. Plus it means they get a playroom now which they love!
i was thinking about starting a thread about my children and sharing rooms, i have 3 kiddies, 6-girl, 4-boy, 5wks-boy
we are currently paying off our own home which we have had for 3years and we have 3bedrooms. the baby is sleeping in our room in his bassinette but will need to go into a cot by 3months as he is very long. i am in two minds about putting the older two together or the younger two together as we dont have the funds to buy a bigger house and we enjoy where we live and can make do with this house for another few years.
Once my younger son was sleeping through reliably (around 2 years) we transitioned him from our room to sleeping in our elder sons room in a toddler bed. I put a monitor in their room so that I would wake at the first sounds either made and be in to settle them before they had the chance to wake the other. They are so used to it now they sleep through any noise the other makes and they love being together. They don't like sleeping apart anymore because they are used to having each other. They have a bunk bed now too.
The good thing about the bunk is the bed head is quite wide so DS1 keeps some of his special things up there and retreats to his bunk when he feels he needs some personal space. Also DS1 tends to wake first and then wake up DS2 because he wants to play with him, so we have a clock in there now and DS1 doesn't come down from his bed till 7am, at which time I don't mind if he wakes his brother. I love hearing them first thing in the morning chatting or playing together in there.
We've been considering this for our girls too. We have family staying at the moment so we put Sarah's cot in Emily's room last night and they did SO great. I was worried it would be tears at bedtime from Sarah but she was helping to put her bedtime toys in, and leaning into the cot which really surprised me. And the giggles this morning were just priceless. For a split second I thought Emily was crying and raced to the door, but then realised they were both in giggle fits playing together. :cloud9:
They will be sharing a room at my parents for two weeks also over christmas so we're thinking by the time we get home they'll be used to it and we may just continue on with sharing. Emily is in kindy next year and is outgrowing her day sleep so Sarah will still get to nap on her own.
Then we can have a spare room for visitors again, and maybe fit the treadmill in that room too. ;)
Once i have DS, he'll be with me for a few months until he outgrows the bassinet then he'll go into the cot in DD2s room. She'll be in a toddler bed.
Once DD2 is about 4, DS will be 2 and then ill move DD2 in with DD1.
DD1 is 4 year older then DD2 so she'll still have her space while her little sister is "little"
Well this is the plan of course, depending on how DS goes with his sleeping because i really dont want DD2 in with DD1 yet and ive already got all the furniture ready for my plan!
Hayley, 6 and Nathan,18 months share. It works well. Skye,3 has her own room but most nights she ends up in bed with me anyway.
When I move out I am thinking of putting the two girls together...
Nice to hear that so many bubs have company in their room at night!! :duel: I know I loved sharing with my brother..most of the time.
Well, what you say confirms that little baby may have to go on his own for a short while...if I can muster up the courage to get them sleeping alone. I am too conscious of their possible fears and soft hearted to control cry, but they aren't sharing well currently!
Would love to have more than two, but can't physically cope with another pregnancy! Bunks it will be for the kids later then. Thanks gals.
