Hi all,

So we think we have decided on our girls name- Olive.

We really really love it and picked it out a while ago.

However we just moved to another
City and our only for friends here (long term friends of DP) have an 18month old lovely daughter called Olivia.

Do you think they are just far too similar? I know they are different names but they are almost the same.

I am even scared to tell them it's the name we have chosen as it looks like we copied.

Like I said, they are the only people we know here and they are so lovely, we are bound to be spending a bit of time with them. Such a pickle!

Oh and the nickname we want to use is olly - and they call her olly!

If this baby is a boy it will save me from all of this haha.

Thanks for your help!

Nope not at all. Totally different 'feeling' names.
I love olive! Beautiful.

Olive and Olivia may look similar, but they are both pronounced very different.
I think they are both beautiful. And I say go for it.

I think they are too similiar. the first 4 letters are the same and pronounced the same. What is it you love about olive. Think about it, weither it is the meaning or what ever and then look at names that are similiar.

depends how they pronounce olivia.. most people say it with the A sound.
say olive and olivia out loud, yeah too similar for sisters but definitely not for friends! :)

honestly though it theyre friends i would just say 'we've decided on a name, its Olive, what do you think as im now wondering if its too similar to olivia'.
and if theyre real friends they wont care!!! :)

Thanks guys!

I think we will bring it up, once we know if it is even a girl.

We just love the name so much, I wouldn't want to regret not using it. But I also don't want to irritate our friends.

The name means olive - derived from olive tree so it might be hard to find another with the same meaning haha. But I get what you mean - we put it in nymbler and there are others that we like but this is still top of the list. We just can't shake it!

Thanks so much for your opinions!

I think they look similar but sound different and have a very different 'feel' to them.

I happen to love both - and also love oliver for a boy!

Love love love Olive! So adorable.

ohhh hard one ... they are so similar, yet different as others have said a completely different feel.

Do your friends have a nickname for her like Livy ? if so Livy and Olly are completely different ... that might help

Yep ... you are just going to bite the bullet and ask them, best to give them some warning if you are set on the name so that they can come around, and as you said it could well be a boy. They will get over it - people don't own names :)

ps Love Olive

I think they're different. Olive is an old timeless classic, Olivia is more modern I guess.

I prefer Olive.

Does your friend have a nickname for their Olivia? If they do maybe still name your daughter Olive but just have a different nickname. My friend's daughter is Olive and gets called Ollie.

i think its fine, my friends daughter is olivia and her nickname is 'liv' or 'livvy'. that would work for olive too.

I love the name olive but hate the name Olivia. Reminds me of the cartoon with the pig!!!

Thanks guys

Yeah they call her olly and that's the nickname we wanted to use too because I don't like liv or livvy. We could just try not to shorten it though!

On another note: do you think olive is going to get really popular?

In my opinion, having similar names, and the same nickname, could create a special bond for these two little girls that could perhaps grow up lifelong friends.

I think they pronounce different enough.

If your not sure maybe Toss around some more name ideas, but if Olive is the name you want, use it.

They are both lovely names and unfortunately very similar
I was in a very similar position to you with a different girls name
And if you didnt think they sounded similar, you wouldnt have posted the question on BH. There are obviously some doubts in your mind. (Just like there were in mine)
But I agree with what someone said about "talking to your friends about it". Suss them out first and then make a decision.
Some people get offended with similar/same names and other people dont.
Good luck in your decision!
