View Full Version : Costs of having a baby
There seems to be a lot of confusion about the costs of having a baby and I'd like to put an article together for our newsletter and for general info on the Bub Hub site to help other viewers. I know that some people have already had discussions about various costs, but I'd really like to put it all in one place.
I'd be really grateful if members could give me info about the full costs that they incurred having a baby - from initial consultations right through to postnatal care and indicate what rebates you got (approx figures are fine, doesn't need to be down to that last cent).
Also, please let me know what health path you followed - eg private with health insurance, private without health insurance, public with gp share care, public, private midwife and what year the costs relate to (eg 2004, 2005, etc)
If you are not happy putting this info on the public forum, please feel free to email me at hilary@bubhub.com.au
Your assistance wil be much appreciated by me and future users!
Many thanks
Hilary

here are the costs for the actual health system also. When discussing costs we as a society have to be aware that there is a great deal of costs that we dont factor in as most of us dont know about them:
November 2004, charges for Non-medicare inpatients, public hospitals, SA:
Vaginal birth without complicating diagnosis: $3,140
Vaginal birth WITH multiple complicating diagnosis: $5,486
Caesarean birth without complicating diagnosis: $5,900
Caesarean birth WITH multiple complicating diagnosis: $10,523.
Also, in the current federal governement's infanite wisdom they have decided to cover the gap payment for private OB's through medicare also. wasnt long before the OBs started to increase their fees...to cover insurance apparently despite the fact the governement subsidise the OBs insurance at tax payers expense also.
So as a tax payer, we subsidise 30% rebate for private insured people + we as tax payers also pay for the gap payment for OBs -which has in some instances jumped from a $700 out of pocket expense to a $2000 expense- and we as tax payers also pay for the increased expenses of the alarmingly high cs rates in both public and private hospitals.
Having insurance and thinking that it is okay to elect a cs because you are paying for it is in fact far from the truth. The costs of our current medical managed maternity system is costing our society a great deal of money and resources.
food for thought!

From what I''m reading the indemnity fee has no rebate? My dr's receptionist said I would get some back, hope she was right as I was hoping for this to count towards my medicare safety net! Being high risk I will have more than the average OB visits and my private health doesn't cover actual visits only the hospital side :(

The receptionist at my obs said the same thing, that I would get a rebate on the $1000 20 week fee, the amount of course will depend on how close I am to the safery net. I am only at 500 dollars now and so I dont know how much I will get beck. Either way, I am told that there is a medicare rebate:thumbsup:

The rebates from the medicare safety net have changed recently. Many people are not aware of this. They no longer rebate 80% of the gap between the scheduled fee and what the doctor charges, they only rebate the medicare-determined schedule.
My friend recently had a baby privately, her ob charged $6000 and she only got $400 back!
Before writing any articles on the cost of having a baby, you should look into these changes as a lot of the rebates that people are quoting won't be relevant today.

BUMP.
I’m interested to know the differences in both cost and service between having a baby with private health insurance and not having health insurance. At this point we would most likely go to a public hospital. I have heard the public system is great!!
I have read through all the posts and they have been very helpful, but was hoping someone could post some more recent information.
Thanks in advance.

See, the difference between our local private and public hospital is basically the food being better privately and you can choose your own OB.
We still have the same OB's though. But with the public system, when you go into labour, you just get whoever is on duty that day. All our OB's are fabulous though.
I was a high risk case and was admitted at 33 weeks. There is 1 OB who doesn't "do" public patients, but made an exception in my case.
The illness that I got, wasn't something he sees a lot, so him doing my c/s was partially out of curiosity and partially worries about bub.
My c/s scar is barely visible thanks to the special technique he uses when closing the wound. He teaches this technique to all his interns and registrars, who do service public patients.
So I have been in the maternity ward for 5 weeks all up and the staff were all absolutely amazing. They tried so hard to make me feel more comfortable at night. I even had 1 older nurse cry with me when I was about to loose my mind from the terrible itch I had. She cried as she saw I was suffering and there was nothing they could do to make me feel better, other than having cold bath in the birthing spas.
Also, in those 5 weeks, I met every OB and their assistants and they were very professional and all my fellow patients had nothing but compliments.
The only down side was that we spent Christmas in hospital as DS was still in SCN. The roast we got, had to be cut with a jigsaw. It was that dry lol. Lucky my parents came in with a picnic basket full of ham and breadrolls :D
If I would ever have another bub (impossible though), I would go public again. No doubt about it. Everything free and great staff.
Public Birth Centre:
I didnt see a GP to confirm my pregnancy becasue I knew I was pregnant so saw no point so = FREE
First hospital visit = FREE

I was exactly the same, except I did see a bulk billed gp to confirm which also obviously cost me nothing. Free care the whole way through and I had my own room as well :D.

Thanks ladies :)
Very helpful info. I've only really started looking into all of this in the last few months.
We do have basic cover for our private health insurance, but we have left it too late to get the pregnancy cover as most of you are aware, it is a 12 month waiting period. We'd really prefer not to wait another 12 months...so have recently started looking at what it's like using the public system. So glad to hear that nealry everyone has had such good experiences.
At the end of the day..the way i see it. As long as our baby comes out healthy and we are both looked after, having any extra special services that may come with private cover such as private room, better food or what not....doesn't worry me. If i can get the same care and services in a public hospital, i'm fine with that.
After all..It's only temporary right :)

I had all my scans done at a private clinic and only paid for the extra non essential 4D scan. I didn't pay for the 12 week NT scan because I was over 30 years old and they bulkbill women over 30 because they are a higher risk.
Other than that, I had to pay for the bloodtest that went with the 12 week scan and got nothing back from that. If I remember right, it was $45,-
Our hospital (just a local hospital, not a big city hospital) offers a
pregnancy care service. This is where you go to get all your checkups done by a midwife. If there's cause for concern, you see the OB via the public system and don't pay for that.
If you see an OB outside of hospital, yes you'll end up being out of pocket.
If you think you are going to be a high risk pregnancy, maybe its worth getting private insurance. Im not sure though.
I didn't know I would end up being high risk, but when I did become high risk, the service provided to me by the public system was excellent.
If I were to have another child (again, not possible), I would be put immediately on the high risk list. I will get to see the OB's every fortnight.
The only problem is that I cant choose which OB I get to see. It depends on who's working when I have my appointments.
I wont comment on the elective c/s bit as that is a painful subject to me and as PP mentioned, it has been discussed in many other threads before.
If you're not Australian and have been deemed ineligible for a Medicare Card, than yes you'll be out of pocket a fair bit :(
If you're on holidays in Australia and go into labour, you'll need to pick that up with your travel insurance (not smart if you didn't get one when traveling pregnant).

NT= Nuchal Translucency scan which is done around the 12 week mark in pregnancy to check for markers of down syndrome and other things.
There is a whole thread with all the abbreviations and acronyms used on bub hub. I'm on my phone so can't post a link. Will try to later if I get on the computer

[QUOTE} Having insurance and thinking that it is okay to elect a cs because you are paying for it is in fact far from the truth. [/QUOTE]
I think this is a myth in itself about people who have private health cover and have 'elective' caesarians do so because they can afford the luxury.
Most women I know who ended up having an elective caesarian through the private health system did so upon evaluating their medical risks. We'll all be in the statistics as elective casearians but it doesn't paint the whole story.
There really aren't too many people I know of who would casually elect to have themselves gutted through multiple layers of tissue and muscle only to be disfigured and incapacitated and unable to freely care for their baby afterwards unless there was a sound reason for choosing to do so. If only we all had the fortune to give birth naturally and safely!

I do know one person who elected a c section because she thought birth was 'disgusting'. She even wanted to be completely under anesthetic for it - thankfully her OB recommended strongly not to. It begs the questions as to why she wanted a baby at all, if she thinks birth is gross wait til she deals with a small child!! Hehe.
I think people like her a few though... I hope

I think this isn't a government set thing. I believe it differs between all the X-ray centers. I know a friend of mine who's 39, had he scan done in Sydney and still had to pay for it.

Yeah, I'm nearly 32 and had to pay for my 12/13 week scan. I got $50 from the $140 back from Medicare but still had to pay it all up front!
