View Full Version : The weirdest names you've got for BOY
Ok so when I say I want an unusual name, I mean ridiculously unusual - so weird you might have heard or seen it maybe once in your whole life. Not the usual lists of 'uncommon' names but something even less common.
I have books full of 'unusual and uncommon' names but they are either very common in other countries, so cultural they sound weird on an anglo-saxon baby or are actually around more often than the book might suggest.
So I want the names you might have heard once that stuck with you or you can remember, something you read in a book, saw on TV, met once - that kind of unusual.
We're struggling! I have two children now with unusual names - Aquila and Xanthe (boy and girl). Xanthe is more common than Aquila but the extent of it is that most people have heard of or met one Xanthe once before (including us - DD went to preschool with another one who was a baby - we've just heard of our second ever and DD is now 9 1/2, a friend from DHs school's baby girl (not in touch with us only on facebook).
Because I'm fussy there are these
Rules:
Cannot start with A, or X and preferably not T.
Cannot start with a ZZZZZ sound (the X in DDs name has this sound)
Cannot start with C/K due to surname.
Cannot end with 'N' due to surname.
Ok, fire away :D

erm, i thought i had a couple, but cant get my head around the requirements :S

16-12-2010, 10:37
sorry, 'rules'
It's not that bad!
Our surname is C****N and I don't like alliteration so I don't want it to be CC or KC. DH is T***N and the 'n' on the end with the n on the end of his surname stops the flow of the name. The kids don't want to share their 'letter' which includes the sound of DDs which is different to the actual letter hence x and z being out, mine is out as it's a K anyway, and DH is T hence the preferably no T so we all have a different one.

What about Holland? I love it personally
A lot of these are being ruled out because we know people with them  (bloody hippies  DH grew up amongst them, parents were and also has three brothers so three got ruled out that way too)
I used to like Dali as a boy or girl name but it has connotations of girl to us because of someone we knew - we'd also have to clear it with her parent (she was killed as a teen). What do you think of it as a boy's name?
I also like Ezra - but same again even though it says boy name everywhere, I knew it as a girls name.
We had our gaelic names picked out but I liked the girl one a bit better, and now we know it's a boy I have issues with the spelling of the boy name we chose - and would rather it altered - but all of our names are 'real' without spelling changes, so I feel like on principle I can't (the principle being using real names with spelling as intended).
Ugh it's so hard!

How many people really love lord of the rings? DH likes Bilbo :heywhat: I don't know what I think. It is totally cute and if he hated it he could be Bill or Billy. But is it too um, I don't know, something?
We were also liking Jago last night (jay-go) - and it would fit our other names in origin too, they are Greek and Italian and Jago is Portugese/Spanish so it keeps the European thing
We've decided middle names will be Brian Robert - no idea on the order though - although I'm tempted to do an in joke name from my dad and make it Roberto - Dad looks like a Mafia Don and my friends have always called him Don Roberto, he also does this face slap thing to DH when they see each other as a 'man hug' and he used to add 'o' to all of his names to make him sound foreign when I was learning what his real names were. So it might become Roberto as a  to him :)

Leif
Very, very common in Norway, just so you know. My host father over there was called Leif and I know of many others.
Rune
Leif's granddaughter in Norway was Rune, also pretty common over there.
There was a boy in DS' kinder class this year called "Sixte", pronounced "six", I think it may have been French, as the mum spoke to him in French.
I also like the name River (like as in River Phoenix :bee:)

hahaha Jadorevous I adore my (our?) doctor he's so awesome, best GP ever :D I swear I rave about the guy to everyone! He's been awesome this pregnancy too, a lovely realist who doesn't hassle or panic or stress me out. He's how we discovered if we changed our DDs name by one letter she had a place name like DS does - he googled while we waited for referrals to print
But yeah I think it's taking the love too far if I call our baby Tullio :p imagine that first visit

He is unreal. We've been seeing him for about 6 years now and he's one of the only doctors I've had who treats me like an intelligent human being. And now he's lost all that weight he doesn't act like a reformed smoker about mine, no drama about it at all.

I think Ludo is a nickname for Ludovico (aka Ludwig) - it means famous fighter. It's very uncommon, but also well know ie Beethoven.
Yeah it IS a boardgame :D hahahaha but it is a 'real' name too.
Yep it is a nickname/derivative of Ludwig :) It's also got an Italian meaning, and also a derivative of a Scottish name :) It means Light in Italian.
You girls who think board games need to go watch Labyrinth :D
Yeah the less common than Cohen is appealing to me a lot, actually. So is the lack of it running with our surname (which has two syllables, starts with hard C, ends with N) too closely. I've slowly been developing more of an issue with the sameness I think.
