My partner has just come home from work with vomitting/diarrhea :barf: :(

Any tips on how to keep bub and I disease free? :D Or is it highly likely we are going to get it too?? Surely if we just stay away from him (sorry dp!) we can avoid it:fingerscrossed: I guess what I'm asking is how contagious is this and how is it passed from person to person?

The only thing you can really do is keep washing your hands and get him to do the same. If you can keep away from him - great!! It all helps.

You will have to be very, very dilligent.

DH came home with a terrible case of gastro when DD was 6m old. I managed to avoid catching it from him, but DD copped it & I then in turn got it from her. A very unpleasant week for all involved!!

Whatever you do, make sure both you & your DP wash your hands thoroughly & frequently. Especially before handling your baby, any food, bottles etc, any toys, bedding or anything else your bub can come into contact with.

Invest in some Glen20 or other anti-bacterial spray & when someone is sick, spray it all over light switches, door, cupboard & drawer handles, toilet seats, rubbish bins, outside of fridge door, taps & anything else you can think of.

Yep, it's a pain in the butt trying to avoid it, but let me, the voice of experience, tell you that it is far more horrific trying to change a nappy full of runny poop when you yourself are running to the bathroom to throw up every 5 minutes!! :barf:

ETA: Depending on the strain of virus, it can be highly contaigous. Better to be on the safe side. Gastro type viruses breed in moist environments - including saliva and other bodily fluids. So don't go sharing cups, cutlery, food etc. and you should carefully disinfect the bathroom or toilet after each "use" if you can.

Here is a really great website I just googled - it tells you everything! www.kidsgastro.com.au (http://www.kidsgastro.com.au/viralgastroenteritis-whatisit.asp) Interestingly, I read in this month's Coles Baby magazine that there is now an immunisation available for 'rotavirus', the most common cause of gastro in children. NB: This website mentions that rotavirus can be contaigous long after symptoms disappear if you are not careful to disinfect exposed surfaces.

Unfortuantely sounds like supplies of extra bogroll and gastrolyte should be immediately obtained.

Keep washing hands, disinfecting toilet, tapfittings at the basin etc. Don't forget to scrub your nails.

My dd has an immune deficiency when it comes to gastro and rotavirus, so she has to be rushed to hospital within a couple of hours of first starting to vomit and be put on high flow fluids for a few days.

For this reason, when we looked at moving, having a second bathroom and a spare bedroom was an absolute must! When one of us is unwell, we isolate ourselves and so far it has been excellent at stopping the spread of viruses! DD hasn't been in hospital for almost a year now:smiliedance:

Lots of handwashing and avoiding contact is about the best advise I can give ... that and pray, pray pray!

My two had it a few weeks back, very nasty bug that it is.
Along with all the other great advice you have received, get yourself some Dettol Laundry rinse and add this when you wash any clothes that may have :barf: on them.
When you wash your hands, make sure it is under warm water and use the soap under your nails as well and wash for 10seconds at least.
Also, get yourself some hospital grade disinfectant and put that in the loo everytime it is used while sick.
:fingerscrossed: no one else in your household in infected.

Steven had it a couple of weeks ago too.....I used antibacterial on the loo every time before I used it! I also washed my hands EVERY time before I picked up our son, and I also made Steven do the same....he didnt touch Oliver for the first 2 days...but once he started to feel better he did the hand washing and didnt kiss either of us.

I slept in the lounge for the first 2 nights as well.....

So I dont know if we were LUCKY and didnt get it, or if Steven had foodpoisioning instead. :(
