My 1 yr old is worry me atm because for about the last 4 month he has almost completley gone off solid food. He used to be a good eater and sleeper but then got sick ad started teething and hasnt been the same since. Some days he will let you feed him breaky and other he wont have it. He never really eats lunch and only picks a tiny bits of dinner.

THen some days he wont eat solids at all. He is still breastfeed and i have started giving him a bottle before bed because i dont know if my milk will still be enough for him. He weighed 8.7kg at 6 months and now a 12 he weighs around 11kg so he isnt loosing weight but he's not putting alot on either.

I really want him to just start eating properly because i want to wean soon but i wont do it untill i know he can get enough food without me feeding him.

Well since he isn't losing weight and if he's in the normal range for weight then I wouldn't be too concerned. Toddlers do go through phases. I would however look at home many bf/milk feeds he is having every day as maybe he is filling up on that too much. If it's not too many then I'd say it's just a phase. I've had so many dramas with my 17mth DD's eating that I just keep myself sane by thinking that the next day will be better. And one big tip I've read a lot is that they will eat if they are hungry. Goodluck and :fingerscrossed: for you.

PJ has gone through this recently. He had a bad bout of Croupe about two months ago and has only really shown an interest in food again over the last week. Mind you he has just had two teeth pop through, so I dare say that has been his problem.

Dear Desertress,

At 12 months, your little boy is a healthy weight for his age. However, by one year of age, it is important that toddlers are receiving a variety of foods for iron and other nutrients, and aren’t solely dependent on breastmilk or formula. It sounds as though he has become reliant on breast and bottle feeding since being unwell (and is it typical for sick bubs to go off their food).

As it has been 4 months since taking a varied diet, it is possible that your son is becoming iron deficient which in turn can result in a decreased appetite.

If he has just developed a bad habit, it may be necessary to start again with foods that are easy to manage – such as purees or mashed foods, just to encourage him to take solids again. Alternatively, he may prefer finger foods to be able to feed himself, copy older children and parents, and to assert his independence!

I would discuss the possibility of nutrient deficiencies with your doctor or a dietitian, and would consider dropping his extra bottle feed at night to increase his interest and appetite for food.
