View Full Version : I have worms!! I never thought I'd be so happy to say that lol
I got myself a worm farm about 2 months ago, and it is so much fun. my 18 month old bub loves to come out and check it every few days and he tips the food into it, and loves spotting all the worms.
I have gotten about 2L of worm juice from it so far, and the worms are really producing well now they have well and truly gotten used to their new home.
I'm using the worm juice on my vege garden, outside pots and indoor pot plants including my orchids, and they seem to be loving it.
When I clear out this lot of castings in about a months time (you do it 4 times a year) I think I will add another layer of worms (another 'room' on top of my worm motel) which should give me heaps of liquid fertiliser and castings for my garden.

I'm curious about worm farms as well. Once our new house is built and we move in I'll be starting a vegie garden and worm farm, but I need to get my facts first as I don't know where to start
So for those who have worm farms, please share your secrets!
Garden centres usually sell them, or can at least tell you where to get hold of them, or if you are a bit more creative than me you can make your own. Basically they are just a container which can hold soil and scraps, and has drainage holes in the bottom to drip the waste into a holding tray down the bottom where you harvest the worm pee from!
Probably the most important things I've found are to keep it in a cool spot, somewhere out of direct sun, check them regularly, every couple of days to see if they have eaten the food, and if so give them more. I put each new lot of food in a different corner so I can keep an eye on how much they are eating. Worms can eat up to their own body weight a day, so if you have a handful of worms, then they will probably eat about a handful of food a day. I chop my wormfood up nice and fine, and make sure it is moist. They have to suck the food, as they have no teeth so smaller pieces get eaten faster.
Not too much citrus as it is too acidic, veer away from protein stuff. If any of the food starts to grow mould, just scoop that bit out and get rid of it.
Make sure the worm farm is moist at all times, not wet, but the consistency of a wrung out sponge.
They also love newspaper/cardboard, so I tear up all the old butcher paper from what our belongings were packed in, soak it in water, and put it on top of the soil and scraps, you are supposed to have about 2 times the amount of paper/cardboard to the amount of scraps they have. I just make sure there is a good layer of the paper over the top of everything, and the wormies are VERY happy!!
I've seem worm eggs and lots of babies lately, and even caught a couple of them mating!! haha.
