View Full Version : Treating eczema around the eye - help!
DD2 has terrible eczema around the eye. Hoping to hear from others who have dealt with this and what worked for them.
In the past DD2 has had some patches of eczema on the trunk of her body, but nothing too serious and QV moisturiser and prescription cream when really bad cleared it up fairly quickly.
But a few weeks ago her eczema flared up quite bad around both eyes, and even now she now has two horrible red rings of eczema around her eyes.
Nothing seems to help - moisturiser (I've tried QV, sorbelene and paw paw ointment), prescription steriod cream (which I was a little reluctant to use because its around the eye but ended up putting it on in an attempt to clear the eczema), anitbiotics to clear any bacterial infection.
We're picking up a new prescription for some other cream from the doctor today, so hopefully that will help some. But just wondering how others have treated eczema on the face, particularly around the eye.
Thanks,
We use Elidel for my DD around the eye area. Don't like using it all the time, but it clears it up quickly.

I have been told that using steroids on the face, particularly the eye, isn't the best option and should really be avoided.
I have eczema and use Colloidal silver in a spray bottle. It is the one and only thing that will help me and completely heal it. You can find it at a health food shop, I got it from Healthy Life.
Moo Goo MSM is also really effective! I love it. That particular one is a bit more potent then the plain one.
HTH.
Cindye - I think Elidel is the cream the cream the doctor has prescribed - DH is picking up the script this afternoon. I hope it works! It's horible to see her like this.Is it another type of steriod?
Boysrgr8 - I've been reading a few other posts about Moo Goo too so I might give that a try as a moisturiser/wash. Seems like everything is hit and miss, so frustrating. But worth a shot!

We use dripasone ointment & QV intensive grease, only thing that works for both girls.
Nothing works for me.
Elidel isn't a steroid cream. It's because it isn't a steroid that it can be used in the eye area- usual steroid creams thin the skin over time and cannot be used near the eyes. I use it sparingly and as infrequently as possible- in lab tests, some poor little lab rats ended up with cancer, if I remember correctly. Just google pimecrolimus (the active ingredient) for the full story.
But it is effective, so I use it. But it can't hurt to be cautious, right?

So true. And what works like magic for one child can have the complete opposite effect on another and make them worse! :hair:
I'm interested in this thread coz my 4 month old DS has shocking eczema, and it has been flaring up round his eyes too recently - he just constantly rubs at them. I haven't been too sure what to do (worried about him rubbing any creams into his eyes).
He's seeing a dermatologist next week so if I get any magic answers there I'll be back & post them for you!
4fullstop - yes, please let me know how you go at the dermatologist and what his treatment plan is. Thanks, and I'll keep you posted on how we go too with this new cream. :fingerscrossed:

Seriously, as crazy hippy it sounds Colloidal Silver is amazing for any type of infection or skin ailment. Because it is a spray and isn't harmful you can spray it straight on the face and not have to worry about hurting anything. Some people drink it but I have found just using it topically is amazing.
For my hands, I couldn't move my fingers without the skin cracking apart and becoming deep long wounds. It was awful. Now I just spray my hands and it is healed within a week. Moo Goo is a fabulous moisturiser and I love it, but it is hit and miss. I haven't heard of anyone using Colloidal and it not working.

So DS & I saw the dermatologist yesterday, & came away armed with 5 x repeat prescription for 10 tubes of steroid cream (Advantan ointment)!! That's right - 50 TUBES!
I was a bit paranoid when I went to the chemist, considering 1 tube usually costs me $15 - $20, but 10 tubes were only $33, so I guess we got some type of bulk discount/rebate :smiliedance:
Anyway, in relation to rubbing his eyes - the dermatologist reminded me that this is a bit of a reflex for babies, and isn't always because of eczema. I realise now that DS's eyes/lids get red when he's been rubbing them, but when he hasn't they clear up and there's not any rash visible. He does get a bit rashy on his cheeks just below his eyes, and I was told it's ok to put the steroid cream on there. But for my DS, it appears there's no eczema immediately around his eye... so no answers for you sorry!!
(I did get told Advantan is the *best* steroid for his type of eczema - genetic, not allergic - apparently it's what they use at the children's hospital in Perth)
Again - sorry, this doesn't really help you OP, but I said I'd report back after seeing the dermatologist so didn't want you to think I forgot

Cetaphil cream is great around the eye as DS has terrible eczema from head to toe & hes eyes get it pretty nasty & we found that this worked the best
Thanks for getting back 4fullstop, and to everyone else who replied as well.
The Elidel cream seems to be working around the eyes, plus she has been on a course of antibiotics to count out any baterial infection. I've also been using Sorbelene cream. The eczema has been looking great one day then flaring up badly the next, but the last few days it seems to remain about 90% better so hopefully we're on a winner with this cream!
