View Full Version : Sticking with cloth...
So, I wanted to hear from ppl.. did you decide on cloth while pregnant, and did you stick to it after bubs arrived? Did you use flats or modern cloth, and did you have support (ie, knowledgable ppl to ask advice etc)?
The reason I ask is because I was telling another mum that we had decided to use cloth, and her attitude was  "yeah, well good luck with that", as they had decided to use cloth (flats, they didn't know about modern cloth) and it lasted about 1 week.
What made the difference between sticking with cloth and giving up?

Cost made me stick with cloth. I have been using terry flats for 9yrs now, lol. Damn that's a long time!! Modern cloth weren't around when I had my first baby, if they were, I didn't know about it because I only heard about them when I joined this site a few months back.
I love seeing their butts wobbling around the house in these clean white (or in my case, blue) nappies. I hate the look of disposables hanging around knees though, makes me cringe.
I was a little unsure about if I would stick with cloth but I have been using terry flats (boosted with microfibre) for nearly five months and love them. And yes there probably is something wrong with me but I actually enjoy washing them :o . I used to use disposies when we were going out for the day but now 9 times out of 10 I use cloth when out too. Cost was a big factor initially when choosing to use flats - I only had to buy a dozen (was given about 30 by a cousin) and have about 25 boosters so have only spent about $45 on my cloth nappies.
Good luck!

they had decided to use cloth (flats, they didn't know about modern cloth) and it lasted about 1 week.
That was me exactly. I tried using flats with DD, lasted about 2 weeks, couldn't organise myself well enough to do it.
Bubhub introduced me to modern cloth. After much consideration, I decided that I was better organised this time around, more used to being a mum-and-wife, more of a "Domestic Goddess" so to speak.
We've stuck with modern cloth for 4 months now, except for a few days here and there when I was just overwhelmed with everything and couldn't face the washing :o
Before I had DD, I used to do washing once a week, 3 loads, that was it. So having to Napisan and then rinse-cycle and then hang out nappies every day was quite a culture shock to me. Everything about being a mum was a culture shock, the first time around!!
Now I do an average of 3 loads a day  And the cost of disposables helps keep me using cloth.
going away for the weekend and seeing the enormous pile of garbage one baby made in 3 days of using disposables was enough to never stray from cloth. except for the flight to canada coming up........
and modern cloth nappies are just so so cool:cool:

i used cloth for my eldest daughter for about 16months, due to we couldnt afford disposables at the time, i used terry flats, i didnt know about the modern cloth available, or wheather they were at the time, so, i had a hard time though, she used to get terrible rash, and she used to leak all the time, and it was hard work scrubbing the nappies and soaking them everyday etc etc.. but if i had of known of the modern ones then it wouldve been great! i used disposables from when i had my second daughter cause we moved then, so, we could afford it a bit more. anyhow.... wish i had of known... bummer!

Isobella was 3-4 months old when I switched to cloth having seen a display at the PBC expo in melb. I had never heard of them before and certainly didnt know anyone that used them. A few friends have since seen them on my bubs and converted so now I've got a little group of friends to chat about nappies with if I have any questions or to compare what we use and why lol
I do around 3-4 loads of washing per day so an extra load of nappies every day is nothing!
Financially I don't think I'm currently any better off due to constant 'need' *cough* to keep buying new ones but when my bubs are out of nappies the resale value of them will help out a lot there.
We decided well before Luke was born, but it wasn't really a decision, we both knew. "Cloth, yes?" "Of course."
We started with prefolds and Bummis covers, which were great, then the modern cloth bug caught on bit by bit Down Under, we saw the explosion happen, and the rest is history.
We kept doing cloth because there was no reason to use single-use nappies. We found cloth to be easy, inexpensive, convenient, much better for his skin (in hospital he had a blistering, horrible rash from disposables), non-leaky, customisable, and lacking in lingering health concerns (asthma, temperature, etc). Plus the amazing cloth community that has developed over that time has been a wonderful thing to be a part of.

We'll be using cloth in the hospital.
Then once the baby is home we'll be using disposables, until we run out, or until she grows out, of the nappies we have.
I have been given a box of newborn nappies, plus 2 packets. And then we have a box of the next size up nappies.
When we run out/when she grows out (whichever happens first) with the newborn sizes we will be switching to cloth.
I have all my cloth nappies ready now and boxes and boxes of the johnson's nappy liners because Kmart was having a 'clearance' of them so i got them very cheap.
We are going to use the other box of disposables if/when we travel to a relatives house or something for a while so that we don't have to worry about washing and what-not.
I doubt i'll change back to disposables full-time tho, its way to expensive and DP is really against them. He doesn't even want her to be in disposables at all... but we were given the nappies, so we may as well use them.
