HELP!
Thursday night I made the yummiest chicken, garlic and lemon dish that I have ever made (if I do say so myself :D ) but my hands have REEKED of garlic since chopping one up for the dish. I cant believe that 4 days later they still smell... I have tried washing them in soap, dishwashing liquid, I've washed my hair, rubbed fresh parsley on them and even soaked them in fresh lemon juice.
They're driving me mad! Have I missed anything? Can anyone suggest how I can get this PUTRID stink off my hands??? :banghead:

Bicarb soda maybe??
My hands always smell like that but try some lemon juice if you have that around.

I soaked them in fresh lemon juice for about 10 minutes last night... I might give the bi-carb soda a shot  How would I 'mix' that up though? Not just rub it on? Or make it a paste with something?

I'd probably make a paste with water.......or maybe even lemon juice?

I'll use the lemon juice again... Cheers for the suggestion!

Here's a little trick for you, it works with onion so I assume it works with garlic as well:
You know those stainless steel scrunchy ball scourers (http://home.vicnet.net.au/%7Eggrec/images/ImagesMagJune2004/scourer.jpg)? Wash your hands with one of those, nothing else, just the scourer. :) It's maaagic.

Whenever I cook anything that stains my hands or makes them smell I use displosable gloves. I buy a box of 100 and use as needed. No smells, no colour (beetroot, cherries always make hands look yuck). Another advantage is that nothing sticks to them. I find it ideal for meat/fish/chicken patties and meatballs.

I used to do that but I got sick of the little people "borrowing" them to make balloons with.

Yeah - that is exactly what hindsight told me to do. Unfortunatley buying a box of disposable gloves wont get this stink off my hands! I'm gonna go and make a paste of the bi-carb now - so I wont be able to chat for the next half hour!
Try rubbing your fingers around the inside of a stainless steel sink or a saucepan. I saw it on TV on a cooking program once. Not sure why but it works! I've tried it just after Ive been chopping garlic - not sure if it will do the job if the smell is still around after a few days though!

Ok - so if my hands have a smell on them that I just can't get away I rub them with ........ toothpaste!!!
Weird but it works!!

if you want to avoid the problem in the first place wash your hands in COLD water.... not warm:shame: or hot:shame: after touching the garlic... warm water opens up your pores... therefor trapping in the smell in your hands.... cold water will not open your pores and your hands shouldnt smell :fingerscrossed: ( unless you have weird hands... hehehe ) you can still use soap or detergent or just plain water... as long as the water is COLD... when you are a chef and work with smelly foods all day this is definatly a good thing to know... i hope this helps you to avoid smelly hands in the future...

Seriously, rub your hands with a stainless steel scourer. Its magic I tell you, magic!
Salt! Scrub your hands with salt and cold water and that should fix the problem! In future, do that after you cut garlic, onions or anything with a strong smell! Works for me!
