one of those baby/toddler seat thingys that you attach to bikes? Are they safe. I am wanting to do a bit more exercise as I only walk everywhere and its kind of boring (I don't have my licence car yet, but should have by the end of the year, but I will still walk or ride a bike and only drive when absolutely neccessary).

I bought one about a week ago and it seems really safe and sturdy. My DD is a bit of a chicken so she is taking her time getting used to it. Only likes sitting in it for about 5 minutes and then asks to get out again. I just think it will take a bit of time for her to stay in it longer. Don't get me wrong, she gets excited when we mention a bike ride but then doesn't last long on it.
The one that i got has a bar in front of them to hold onto and also they are well strapped in with straps that go over her shoulder and clips between her legs and her legs are also velcro strapped into place so they don't dangle. In the box also was a protection mat to put around the bike where their feet go so their is no change of toes getting tangled if their feet do come free. I got mine from big W for about $100.00.
Hubby said that you can hardly tell the difference when riding with the seat on. ( i havn't riden the bike as i am 6 months pregnant (my god - what a sight that would be  ))

I took my DD out in the bike seat all the time when she was little-from about 12 months, I think. I was still able to put her or DS#1 in it up to the age of about 4. I plan to do the same with DS#2 when he is a bit bigger.
I was out looking at them today and am going to get one monday! What a coincidence!

we bought one when my oldest was younger cant remember how old and i got mine for $40 from toyworld and it was really good. he loved being in it. I have never riden with it attached as its attached to dh bike but i dont see it being a problem as long as your a confident and safe bike rider.

I would NEVER use one of them after the experience I had with them! I was travelling with my 1yr brother at the time and it broke off! He hit the pavement, cracked his helmet, and after rushing him to the hospital he had neck damage and a dent in his skull!!! I wasn't going very fast either. Scared the living hell out of me and I vowed never again.

We have a bike trailer instead. DH doesn't trust the bike seats for safety as it adds so much weight to the bike fairly high up, and the rider needs to adjust to that when cornering and stopping.
I agree with Martha.
We bought a bike trailer as they are much safer. Should the bike tip over, the trailer stays upright, whereas on a bike, the child has a long way to fall to the ground.
Just a thought.....
