View Full Version : Sharp, stitch like pain in lower left abdomen??
Hi ladies,
This morning I had this pain and it has progressively gotten worse throughout the day.
It's a very sharp pain, similar to a stitch I guess in my lower left side.
I don't have pain urinating, the stitch like feeling just intensifies straight after I have emptied my bladder.
Not sure if it's bladder related as I don't even know where my bladder is but this pain is certainly on my left side.
I am 10 weeks pregnant, the baby is on my right side.
This is different to the ligament pain and cramping I have experienced in the past and it's constant!
Any thoughts?
I have a referral for a urine test which I will do tmrw (just standard through my ob with a blood test that I got at my 7 week visit but I've been too sick to do them).
id call the miwifes and ask their advice!goodluck=)

I had a sharp pain on my lower left side around 10-11 weeks...it got massively worse once I urinated. It actually got so bad I couldn't even lift my leg to walk. I was in agony and went to the ER...and it turns out it was constipation. Strange as I had just had a BM. Of course, with any pain, I would contact your dr. or midwife, but in the mean time, you can drink some prune juice or eat something high in fiber to see if it helps.
I was thinking that and it sounds exactly the same as me. My BM are not what they used to be but I had one today and still so painful.
I don't have a midwife and it's a Sunday so my only real option is to go to ER which I don't want to do but if it stays like this I think I night have to as it's really painful and i'm having trouble walking as you were.
I'll try and load up on the fibre.
I've had the same, but on my right hand side. I've discovered its two things 1. constipation and 2. ligaments. I spoke to my midwife and she said very normal, it actually has me doubled over when its ligaments (that happens on both sides) and is worse at night. I also get it after weeing. I've had it from about 7 weeks

Yeah, try as much as you can before going to the ER. I waited for 3.5 hours and was never seen. I decided they must not think it was important enough, so I went home as I was miserable sitting there. I went to bed, and when I woke up the next day it had gone away. I had a dr. appointment the next day just to be sure, and he said it was constipation. I was so mad at myself for going and wasting my time at the ER...but it's my first baby and I would have never thought it was constipation.

Before you load up on fibre, load up on water. So many people increase their fibre without increasing their water intake, and they just get more constipated. Being pregnant, your body needs more fluid- more blood, amniotic fluid etc, etc. and you often don't drink as much because you are peeing all the time. The same hormones that relax your ligaments so you can stretch to accomodate the baby, also relax the bowel to some degree and make movement of waste through there slower. You need to have a high fibre diet as well as plenty of fluids to keep everything moving. The only thing in that area is your intestines and your bowel (pic (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.dementedworld.com/images/abdomen-anatomy.JPG&imgrefurl=http://www.dementedworld.com/the-parasite-reflex-another-mangled-take-on-mainstream-medicine-ban-furniture-instead/&h=270&w=297&sz=16&tbnid=drebN4y-agoKNM:&tbnh=105&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dabdomen%2Banatomy%2Bimage&zoom=1&q=abdomen+anatomy+image&hl=&usg=__zFvZtB77E97njQH2EltXZitSXn4=&sa=X&ei=F6_oTLj4M4WivQOPt43DCA&ved=0CBkQ9QEwAA)), so I am guessing it's constipation.
I had the exact same stitch type feeling of my left hand lower abdomen for ages around 10 plus weeks, when I asked my OB he said it was constipation and it is quite normal... after that I noticed I would get the pains and after I did a bm the pain would disappear, so I must agree with the other girls and say constipation!
However, if it doesnt go away after you do bm, then it might be worth getting it checked out just in case!
Good luck!
Thanks for all the posts!
I have a feeling that's what it is as i have had it before but is usually passes with a BM and is not nearly as intense but it's the same 'sensation'.
I have not been drinking nearly enough water and my diet is pretty shameful due to morning sickness but I have to fix this, it's agony.
I was able to fall asleep with some panadol but I can still feel it there like it's going to come on like before any minute.
