View Full Version : Rash- Huggies or cloth making it worse?

My 8 month old has had this persistant nappy rash on her hips and bottom. I couldn't figure it out for ages, because it's not your normal nappy rash- I mean, it's above her bum crack and on her hip! But then I realised it was EXACTLY where her huggies nappies sit, but don't have absorbant layers- does that makes sense? On the hips you have plastic tabs, above the crack you have a wide layer of elastic.
But here's the catch.
It only seems to get really red and inflamed at the end of the day. DD wears modern cloth during the day, and a disposeable over night. So while this rash sits EXACTLY where the disposeable nappy sits, it seems to get worse in cloth... In the morning, it looks quite light and like it's healing.
Suggestions? Help? I have creams, but I'm more interested in future PREVENTION then a cure. She's also had loads of nappy free time.
I don't want to stop using cloth, really. Really don't want to.
My mother says it mightn't be nappy rash, because it's hot to touch.
We've been using rocking green for three months, cloth during the day and disposeable at night for pretty much her whole life.
Anyone can suggest what's causing the rash??? Please?

Could it be the detergent your using on the cloth nappies?
I have very sensitive skin but only in patches if that makes sense.
Other than that I don't know but hopefully another might be able to give advice

DD got a bad thrush infection just after I started using rockin green to wash the nappies in.. Might have been a coincidence, bit thought I'd mention it as you said you had recently started using it too?! have you considered it may be thrush? I got some clonea cream from the chemist & used that 3x a day + zinc at every nappy change @ it cleared up within 4 or so days. Also changes cloth nappies every 2-3 hours (or whenever noted to be wet) and lots of nappy free time. I think the rash was always a little worse after disposables, but she's only in disposables at day care & I suspect they're not as vigelent about changing her nappy as often as we are at home (logistically understandable when they have 10 kids and 2 carers!).
yeah that definately can cause it! Detergents/washing agents cause my sister who is 18 massive issues with excema even now it sounds like the most plausible reason.she buys her wash powder through amway but you can get them from health food stores or online! Goodluck

Could you maybe try using just one or the other type of nappy for 48 hours and see if you can eliminate one as the cuase that way?

The rocking green site says that after using rocking green, some babies do break out on a rash, which is caused by rocking green removing the chemicals left behind by other detergents.
She's had the rash on and off for a week or two, the last outbreak was over six weeks ago. I've noticed she seems to break out more when her father cares for her- he's been away a lot for work- but it could be a coincidance. But I also think he forgets to put barrier balm down and cleaning her bottom when she's done a wee, he just puts a new nappy on. But I feel like it has to be MORE then that?
Before rocking green, I used omo, because I was staying with my mother and that's what she had. Rocking green is supposed to be good for cloth nappies because it doesn't leave behind/ have the stuff that causes rash.
I tried her in cloth over night- so maybe 36 hours in cloth- and she seemed to get worse. But where her cloth nappies sit on her isn't where the rash stops- it stops exactly where her huggies nappy stop on her.
It's not on or around her lady parts. Just hips and right above her bum crack. At night she sleeps on her tummy or her side.
I change her cloth nappies alot, which is part of the reason I like using cloth. She's a light wetter, so she'd have to be in a disposeable for 4+ hours to get it decently wet. I feel good changing her- like I'm a caring mummy :P I change her nappies every two hours or so.
Then again, my partner likes to wait till she's soaked them before changing... but I really feel like he's not the sole cause.
