View Full Version : Mozzie plague

After recent flooding in this town we now have a plague like mozzie population.
It's driving me insane.
The kids look like they have a disease, with scabby, swollen and irritated limbs and wherever else the buggers get them.
Makes no difference what time of day you are outside, there are at least 10-15 mozzies hovering around you.
If mozzies are a problem where you live how do you deter them?
Repellent?
Something else?
Also once bitten do you have any magic remedies for getting rid of the itch or swelling, it's driving the kids crazy in bed.
Last night I used haemorroid cream:o, it said it had local aneasthetic in it and I thought it might reduce the swelling and irritation (It was all I had).
Anyone with better ideas
Thanks:)
Apparently mozzies are attracted to people who have eaten bananas. I wonder if there is a food you can eat to deter them.

Thanks, that's interesting. I often wonder why sometimes you seem to get alot of bites and other times not so much.
maybe we should consume large amounts of garlic, or is that just for vampires:p
pinetarsol solution (from chemist) is great for getting rid of the itch. Add a couple of capfulls to the bath water, and let them sit in it for 5 or more minutes. Keep their torsos and arms wet as well. After 5 mins the itch will be gone and won't come back for 12 hours.

oooh thanks I have added it to my shopping list for tomorrow:)
Hope it helps, word of warning, get out the clothes pegs, it doesn't smell too good, our girls don't complain but I air out the bathroom afterwards (where's the clothes peg icon?) lol
:hugs: We've had an outbreak of mozzies too. My poor kiddies look diseased. For repellent we used aeroguard and mosquito bands/bracelet. As for the itch we used spray on paxyl (anaesthetic) from the chemist, but i'm not sure it worked for very long. We also used claratyne (for kids), which worked well. I have limited their out door play for a while too, and they are looking much better than they did last week. Good luck with your mosquito management, as they sure are annoying.

I grabbed some, haven't tested it out yet so thanks for the warning. We are currently att he scabby stage till our next outdoor play:)

Thanks myfab4, from memory we don't live too far from each other(hope that doesn't sound stalkerish lol) you mentioned once a long time ago where you were but you may have moved. There aren't many BHers in this area so it stuck in my mind:o
I haven't heard of the mozzie bracelets, do you get them from the chemist?
You may be too scared to reply now:laughing:
Yep you can get mozzie bracelets from the chemist, well from our chemist anyway. Actually I saw them at Home Hardware the other day too.
When I read your post I thought maybe you lived close by as it sounded so similar.

As long as you don't think I'm stalking lol
I am about an hour north-east of you on a creek that recently flooded. Cryptic huh:laughing:
I will defintely try those bracelets, will be a good look with one around each ankle and wrist to keep them at bay.

I live in that area as well. If you go outside atm, there is a constant hum in the air from all the mozzies. I've even got bites on my palms and soles of my feet. I have aerogard which can be used on children 12 months and older which is good but we still get bitten, just not as much! I'm more worried about the snake plague we seem to have going on our farm!!!

the hum describes it perfectly. Am not looking forward to the snake plague, they would have been washed everywhere.
I was slathering the kids in Rid just to walk from the car to the house bringing groceries in yesterday, need a forcefield lol
there is a product you can buy from the supermarket/ hardware .. its a plug in thing .. that comes with pads that you insert into it ...
it was a godsend when Jack was born and there were mozzies everywhere...

my-fab4 I'm really interested to hear about the wristbands- do you really think they work? We have a really bad mozzie problem here too this year. :( And I am getting tired of having to slather the kids in repellent everytime they go outside.
There are mozzie repelling plants that you can buy- I am heading to the nursery this arvo to find out more... they particularly like to live in our deck right at the back door- so I am hoping I can plant a few pots on the deck to atleast try and keep them away from the house entrance. (I will get back to this thread when I find out the name of the plants!!).
As for the itch... we keep Claratyne liquid close at hand for the boys- they both react terribly- big swollen welts, so it is really helpful for us to hit it hard with some Claratyne to stop the itching.. and one dose/24hrs means its pretty effective.

There is about a 2km track between my house and mailbox. Cannot go down the track now without seeing at least 2 brown snakes and a few big lizards. Used to walk it with pram but too many big snakes now.

Hi, im allergic to mozzies. REALLY bad my whole bite mark swells up about 10 times as big. I don't know how old your kids are but I take vitamin b complex & garlic capsules daily.. and just eat more garlic.
Also we have one of those bug zappers IYKWIM? those blue light things that zap the bugs... we have it on 24/7 and it helps SO much.
Also if you have pot plants outside. Mix eucalyptus & water in a spray bottle very strong though and spray in the bottom where the water tray is.
Have you got mozzy nets for the kids? they think they are cool like a castle lol and they keep them away:)
Hope this helps.
Basil is a good natural mozzie repellant, we have four basil plants located around our back and front doors, haven't had a mozzie in that area since we put them there :) Not too sure how big an area it covers, but we've got a little balcony that stays mozzie free thanks to the basil.

I'm not that far from you mitake and we are getting eaten alive by mossies too. The river has overflowed so it's now a breeding ground for mozzies. DS in particular is covered in bites and they are everywhere even thru the day:(

I swear by euculyptus for the itch, you can buy it in spray cans at coles (near the panadol and stuff) im not sure if just the oil works.
I have found nothing at all the keeps the little buggers away, and nothing much that helps the itch and swelling.
Stingose works reasonably well.
We're in an area where a river, about 5 creeks and a couple of lagoons flooded, and there's nasty black water everywhere. I'm quite concerned about what the dirty little mozzies are passing from person to person... :(

have never heard of this and have no idea what it is. Plant, cream ,oil? Am I close?:) Where would I ask for it?

I've seen those and wondered how well they worked. We have an indoor fly/mozzie killer that seems to work quite well, just not when we are outside.

I have been using claratyne when they have the big welts like outbreaks, seems to give them some relief.

Some good ideas there, they would love a mozzie forcefiled net for over their bed. I use eucalyptus for lots of things so spraying it about might be good, wonder if it works as a deterrent on yourself:detective:

I thought you made mention years ago that you were nearby or used to live in the area. Now I want to know where you are:p

I have basil seeds will have to put some up in the vegie patch so it's not unbearable pottering about in there over summer.

I did try that, DS2 seems to have a phobia of spray cans (thinks it's suncream) and wouldn't have a bar of it. I have used the oil as an antiseptic, fab stuff that is

I can only imagine what they are spreading. Doesn't rain for years and now look at the place;)
Kids are looking less diseased today, haven't been outside for a few days as we have all been very unwell, I blame the mozzies lol.
