View Full Version : Are bibs potentially dangerous?
I was just wondering if any of you believe bibs can impose a danger threat to young babies??
I would love to hear experiences and thoughts
M.
I guess they could be dangerous if bub was climbing down from somewhere and the bib got caught and choked them...I only put bibs on my bubs when they are strapped into the high chair/pram eating so have never had any probs.
I wouldnt leave bibs on when they were asleep, for fear that they could cover there face and suffocate them.

I don't like the tie-up bibs, I always thought I was a bit paranoid but I just don't like the idea of tying ANYTHING around a babies neck.

I can't believe that they are even allowed to make tie-ups.

Me either . Way too dangerous!
I agree with you Foxy, I cant believe they are allowed to make them!
I agree about the tie-ups. My favourite are velcro 'cos they'll rip off anyway if too much pressure is put on.
I've used bibs with all of mine (no probs) and they're a godsend to avoid extra washing - they're also so handy for wiping up unexpected little spits. What would we do without them ?

Hey, remember those hard plastic ones with the tray at the bottom?? I am 27 years old, and I reckon the last time I wore one of those bibs I was 2 or maybe 3 years old - and I STILL remember how bl**dy uncomfortable they were!!!!!
(But I loiked the tray - save the food for later   )

I don't like tie ups at all!!
You can still get bibs with a tray at the bottom, but they are more like soft rubber than hard plastic...DS actually wears one when he has stuff like rice or spag bol for dinner coz he drops it on his lap and he hates getting food on his clothes  no idea where he got that from

I think almost anything is potentially dangerous to some extent...
But constant supervision minimises the risk.

I know what you mean. The one and only time Bug wore a bib, it was a tie on and she nearly choked herself trying to get it off. In the end i just bought some cheap tshirts to change her into at meal times

my ds hates having a bib on lol i have tie-ups,velcro and press stud ones. and i dont really use any of them coz ds has figured out how to take them all off lol but i think supervision can minimise the safety risk.

Yup, me too
I only use a bib on EJ when shes eating solids - and 1/4 the time i dont anyway unless its something real runny as shes a pretty neat eater. I always take it off when shes finished. Its rare she'd have a bib on at any other time as she rarely drools with teething.
I haven't any tie up ones though (they are mainly velcro) and don't think I'd buy any cause of the safety angle.

i have one similar to this for DS#3 but its made of a soft rubber kind of stuff. Made by tomee tippee and its great! Plus i have another thats made by Sassy and its cloth on the back but plastic on the top and a clip on tray on the bottom, its bright and coulorful and all they only need to be washed in hot soapy water or wiped down and they are clean
they are good coz it saves on loads of washing and the big tray catches most dribbles or spills!
not a fan of the big hard ones though or tie backs  these ones are way comfier :D
I definately agree the tie ups pose a danger, But realistically anything around a bubs neck could be dangerous and i would only use it under suppervision (during mealtimes etc). I dont know if the disposable bibs are as dangerous unless they eat them?

Brodie has to wear bibs during the day as hes been a shocking dribbler since 3 months! and i dont mean little dribbles, i mean i hav to change his bib every 20 mins or so , if its on for more than an hour i can literally wring it out!!!!
but like others have said i dont use tie up ones, and i take it off before he goes to sleep.

I think they would only be dangerous if they were still wearing them when they went to bed.

I have a dribbly 4-month-old and have just started putting bibs on her during the day. But she spends a lot of time under her playgym playing with and chewing on toys and I came into the kitchen yesterday to find that she had flipped up the bib (not a tie one) back over her face and with arms failing around was struggling to bring it back down.
Now this gave me a scare cos I had been a few mins in the loo. She was getting air, but I tell you, not bl00dy much else beside carbon dioxide. She was sucking in her breath which means the bib was stuck against nose and mouth. She smiled and giggled when I whipped it off her as if nothing had happened (and she is liking peek-a-boo lately) but I was horrified.
I will NEVER have a bib on her unless she is sitting up in her rocker, my lap or the pram.

This is a great idea for a bubby who's onto solids! Especially coming into summer when it can be just stuck over a singlet top.
For younger babies I think its ok but if you're like me and busy with a toddler and need to be able to put bubby down in a playpen for bit, take the bib off first. Probably everyone else knows this already. I feel so stupid after yesterday, like I'm incompetent and should have known.

I got one of these too as I was very sick of trying to get pumpkin stains out of the cloth ones. It's perfect - everything just rinses off afterwards! :smiliedance:
