Just out of curiosity, how does everyone sterilise their bottlefeeding equipment (or dummies etc in the case of breastfeeders)? I wonder what the most popular method is...

*Edited to add*
And for those of you who are still pregnant, how do you plan to sterilise?

I used milton when DS was little, but it discolored the teats really badly and I hated the smell :barf:
I used it a few times for DD's stuff but it was discoloring the bottles as well as the teats so I got a microwave one instead

I still have a bottle of milton tho, make it double strength and use it to make my plastic containers/bowls clear/white again

I was told by staff at the childrens hospital that they no longer use Milton because it can cause thrush so with DS we changed to a microwave steralizer. I only wish I used one with DD it is si muck quicker and no smell:thumbsup:

Definitely microwave!!

With both DS's I used Milton and could never understand why you'd want them drinking out of something that smelt so awful, I ended up boiling everything.

I wish I had the microwave steriliser when I was bottle-feeding 2 bubs at once!!

I'd love to know what research they based that on!! The only way I can think of is that you bathe the CHILD in Milton and it kills off all the body's natural bacteria, leaving a clean slate for the thrush to move in?

Milton is nothing more than a glorified version of chlorine, same stuff that's in tap water. Plus, it evaporates, so there wouldn't even be much of it on the bottle/dummy/teat anyway when you gave it to the baby. Apparently you can use it for sterilising drinking water :barf: - which is what the army actually does, or so DH told me after he found the free sample milton tablets I got at the baby expo.

:detective: hmmmm

But for the poll, I voted microwave. Four minutes and BING! all done. I don't do it so much for germ killing (hot soapy water will do that) but all I have to do afterwards is let the water and steam evaporate and it's all dry too. Drying up is my pet had house chore.

I used to boil the bottles once a week, but used hot soapy water, rinsed and air dried them all of the rest of the time ... I gave up boiling except for on occasion (like if I found a bottle hidden somewhere as kids are apt to do!) once they started putting thier fingers in thier mouths and picking stuff up off the floor.

Hi,

I used the Tommiee Tippee electric steraliser up until 3 days ago. I now just use hot soapy water, rinse then air dry now as Poppy is 5 months old and everything she grabs goes in her mouth anyways! Besides I think it's good to help get their little immunity up anyways.

jennababe.. washing the bottles equipment ect in hot soapy water is equivalent to sterilising apparently. Many hospitals don't sterilise anymore. They say that it doesnt make much difference.

When I was formula feeding DS, and now to sterilise my breast pump and storage bottle I use a cheap Target microwave steriliser. I'll probably use it up to 9-12 months. I know that a lot of stuff goes in her mouth before then , but minute germs from milk that's are only killed off when the bottles reach the temperature of 100C is best avoided. You can't really build up resistance to that or none of us would get food poisioning or upset stomach's as adults, apparently...
