Hi,
Calling all Catholics, I need your advise
My bestest friend is Catholic and she has asked me to be godmother to her son, and I said yes (what an honour! I am so thrilled):smiliedance:
How do I find out about being a godmother, what do I need to do, when, etc...
Any advise would be welcomed
Should I buy a christening pressie? Any ideas?
Thanks for your help, Inforapenny

Righto!
There's nothing that you really have to "do" apart from promise to involved in the childs life and provide guidance as they grow...I see my daughters Godparents (one isn't Catholic, the other isn't practicing) as future mentors for her...people she can always go to with the "heavy stuff" in life.
There's heaps of ways you can go giftwise - A really nice bible is always special...something to keep and pass on etc....a crucifix and chain..ummm oh I've gone blank!...
i think there is a store online
called ichristian???
www.ichristian.com may work...or www.ichristian.com.au hhhhhmmmmmmmmmmm
hopefully;)
youll be able to get a few ideas from there

What an honour all right! You must be a very special friend indeed!
There's nothing that you 'have' to do, although if the parents are going to a Baptism 'meeting' beforehand it would be good if you went along so you can get an idea of what goes on on the actual day.
Basically you are their 'sponsor' into the Catholic church and that you can be there for spiritual advice (I'm constantly getting the "Mum told me to ask you about..." phone calls from my girls!) and basically another parental figure.
I'm a godmother to 2 absolutely beautiful and intelligent little girls and with each of them I bought a gold chain with a cross for their Baptism...something they can wear for their First Holy Communion and Confirmation as well.
My goddaughter recently celebrated her First Holy Communion and I got her a gorgeous pearl bracelet with her name on it and a cross - that's something else you could also get instead of the necklace (probably more likely that she'd wear it) - it's from Girly Twirly gifts in the States and the website says it's the 'ultimate godmother gift'!!!
It's also nice to remember the actual Baptism date every year with a little card or a phone call as it is seen as their 'birthday into the Body of Christ'.
Congratulations!
