After being immunised against rubella and waiting a very long three months, I'm heading off to the doctor next week to see whether it has worked. Apparently the vaccination doesn't work for about 5% of people. I'm starting to worry that I'm going to be one of those people, which would be a problem because I work with children. The doctor told me that if it didn't work, I would have to avoid children and crowds - not likely in my job!! Has anybody else gone through pregnancy without immunity? How common is rubella? Is is easy to catch? I'm probably worrying for nothing but was curious what I was supposed to do if the immunisation didn't work! (I was immunised as a teenager but that one either didn't work or has worn off in my old age!!)

I have been immunised, but somewhere along the years it has worn off.
So i am going through the pregnancy being non-immune to it.
I did my child care work experience without being aware of the fact that i was non-immune, and it was fine :)
I am one of the 5% of people where the vaccine has not worked. I have extremely low immunity after being vaccinated 3 times. I have 3 healthy babies so it worked out ok for me although I didn't work with children or crowds at the time. Hopefully the vaccine has worked for you, people like me are rare. :fingerscrossed: there are no problems.
hi little bean I worked as a preschool teacher when I was pregnant with my dd and I found out that I not immune to it I just had the vacc when she was born and no problems.hope all goes well for you
I am another one of those 5%. They gave me 2 injection within 2 yrs to no avail. They didnt work. So I have has 2 perfectly healthy boys with no immunity to Rubella. Hope all goes well for you :fingerscrossed: :hugs:
I may be one of those myself! I had the shot twice when i was a teenager but i'm not immune now. I have to go fo the shot next week some time but two doctors have told me that they only recommend you not ttc for one month now, not three! I'm not sure how much to trust that!

i think i must be one of those 5% too! i had my injection in high school. But after i had my dd they tested all the bloods and said it was doubtful i was immune so i had to have it again! i should go get it tested to see if i am still immune to it>

Puk, I had read on the internet that the recommended waiting time is now one month. My doctor also thought that was the case but when he had a look at the instructions that came with the injection, it was still marked as three months. We were both surprised and, of course, I was disappointed (although I would have felt a bit uncomfortable being amongst the first group to only wait a month - just in case they were wrong about changing it!!). It might be different for other brands of vaccinations.
I think the whole waiting period is just a precaution anyway - I read a study where 700 women were vaccinated when they were pregnant but didn't know, and not one of their babies got sick from it. Perhaps just the companies taking extra precautions so they don't get sued?
Hoping to get the all-clear next week. If not, I guess I'll have to decide what to do about work. Oh well, it'll all be worth it in the end!
