My cousins name is Kitty...I think her real name is Katherine but she never uses it.

Everything if her legal name is Kitty, and she is from Holland

we were avoiding 'K' as our last name starts with K.
we also don't want anything too unusual as our last name is Chinese.
DHs horrrible aunty (the offensive know-it-all) is Kathleen and Kate for short.
*sigh* maybe next time will just be a singleton boy (since we can't find TWO boys names we like)

I wanted Kitty for my first. I got it from watching The Sulivans as a child. My husband was happy with Kitty because he thought Kitty Pride was cool in the Xmen.

However we both agreed the Kitty wasn't good enough for a name in it's own right and therefore needed to be a nickname. Katherine was the obvious choice, but I wanted something more unusual, less common. Therefore my husband suggested Kaitlyn as we both have scottish heritage. I chose the spelling and we named her. Then discovered that Caitlin was the 13th most popular girls name in the year she was born (so much for being unusual).

After she was born, Kitty just never seemed appropriate and we didn't use it as a nickname either. Her nicknames were Kaitly and Kt. When she was in year 3 she asked where her name came from and we explained the above to her. She then went through a phase of wanting to be called Kitty but it barely lasted two months.

Now, 16yo, she accuses us both of being children when naming her and thinks we were foolish. She is happy enough with her name but given the choice of the two would've preferred Katherine.

She prefers unisex names herself, and using them for the less common gender. Whilst at present she doesn't see her future self having children, she expects that to change with age and has discussed potential names she would consider in that event.

Re: avoiding K.

Most of the abovementioned names can easily have a C substituted for a K.

Catherine
Catalina
Catarina
Catrina
Catriona
Caitlin

PS: I think Catherine would go nicely with Elizabeth and James, as they are all oldfashioned English names.
