called Brisvegas?
I was born in Texas and then moved to Sydney, my DH who was born in Sydney has no idea either. We have tried to work it out and can't. Brisbane certainly isn't like Las Vegas.
It doesn't have anything spectacular that would set it appart or like Vegas, I don't think as a city it is really anything to terribly fantastic. Please don't shoot me for that comment. I mean Southbank is nice but (I don't think or feel) that it can compare to the opera house and harbour bridge.
So why is Brisbane called Brisvegas?
I dont live in Brisbane so I cant help you there. DF calls the little town we live in (Probably 2000) people Tom Vegas as he likes to THINK its somewhat like Vegas . Therefore hes dreaming!!

hmmm:detective: I could be completely and utterly wrong here but will go out on a limb with this one as a old Brissy girl. Could it have something to do when Joh was premier and he wouldn't let us have poker machines when the others states did?
Somehow that is coming up in my extremely vague memory but could be so so so badly wrong?????????????

^I'd go for the second explanation on the link above.
I've lived here for 13 years and in the area my whole life and I don't remember hearing the term before '94/95.
I am a Bris Vagas user as you can tell by my profile. I use in cause I used to live in Melbourne and now in QLD. But there we say Bris Vagas as an insult i suppose at how boring the night life is and small the city is compared to Melbournes. :D
Brisvegas, Brisneyland, Bris-Bain. Just an affectionate name that we like to call our 'little' city.

Hang on, let me find that shooting emoticon...
True, we don't have the harbour bridge (or the ridiculous traffic or tolls to go with it), or the Opera House (It's an icon - I agree there).
But what we do have is a city with a community spirit, where you can still walk from one end of the CBD to the other in a pair of heels, great racecourses, wonderful parks, a small-town atmosphere in a rapidly advancing city, cafe's & restaurants, access to some of the best coastal areas (even God's Country smartypants) and the ability to live just a couple of K's from the city but still in suburbia. So there:p
And Pumba's coming between the 6th and the 9th too.:hugs:
No idea on BrisVegas though:o

RM even Sydney can't compare to my piece of paradise! :p I just meant that there was nothing that stood out!
These are the few cities I think are absolutely fantastic! Paris, NY, Sydney :D
Oh and I hate to tell you yet again, that it will be between now and the weekend! So sorry you will loose that bet!

Definately a tongue in cheek way of referring to our humble little city:D

I'm a proud briswegian and bris vegas is an affectionate pun for the distinct lack of razzle dazzle.....but that just they way we briswegians like it. I wouldn't live in melbourne or sydney for quids.

You said it perfectly Rynosmum!! I love being a bris vegas 'member' & wouldnt live anywhere else even if you paid me! I've been to Sydney & Melbourne before...not my cup of tea. I love my little city :D
I live 2 hours outside of Sydney and would never ever live there! We had to make an unexpected trip to Sydney yesterday and when we were leaving I said to DP 'promise me we will never ever live here.' I'm not a country girl or anything like that but I would rather live in Brisvegas than Sydney (or Paris...don't like Paris either, I've been twice).

Because we're Aussies and so if it has a name we'll change it or abbreviate it or give it a nick name!!! That's what we do!!! :p

Yup, that's what I think too
I have always taken it to be sarcastic in reference to what goes on there. Or what doesn't.
Personally I like the place. I lived there for two years and then moved to Sydney. What an idiot. Now I am with DP and we have a baby so I am stuck here. And not even in a nice part of Sydney - that's only for millionaires.
