Second time round and i'm breastfeeding and it's so far working out alright.
:fingerscrossed:
Last night after having spaghetti bolognaise for dinner (with garlic bread), Machan was unsettled all night and has continued to be all day today.
I went and saw my mum at work and was told by different people that there are some foods recommended to stay away from whilst breastfeeding as these can cause unsettledness and wind in babies drinking the milk. (i.e garlic).
Is this true??
What foods would you recommend to stay away from (or cut right down) whilst breastfeeding.

Personally I don't stay away from ANY foods while BF (I don't have booze though), but I have been told that chocolate and dairy can affect the baby.
I guess since the baby gets whatever you eat, though somewhat filtered, you could have problems.
I think the baby's poo and behaviour (crying, unsettled etc) might tell you if they aren't happy.

For me I can't have garlic, onion, capsicum, beans, brocolli, chocolate, caffeine, fizzy drinks, anything with artificial sugar (equal, diet drinks/lollies)
OMG PrincessMum! You are a SAINT!
If I couldn't have chocolate I think DS would be out on his bum.
To answer the OP - I've never had to avoid anything for DS and I've never noticed any effect on him from me eating anything including huge chocolate pig outs, strong curries etc. I think it must vary from women to women quite a lot.

Thanks for your replies:)
PRINCESSMUM - I don't think i could cope. No chocolate = no thank you, fend for your own kid!!
I guess it's all going to come down to trial and error. I'm going to start noting down what i'm eating and seeing if it has any effect on him.
Wish me luck!!:fingerscrossed:

I can't eat onions, tomato, garlic, steak, or gelatin with my DD. Every baby is different so trial and error is a must. I thankfully :smiliedance: have had no problems with chocolate and coffee :flowerz: which are my staples on any given day lol.
Goodluck!!!!

Hey
My paed said that babies react to food differently but they do tend to get used to it after a while. he said that the more foods you control the more difficult they are as toddlers/children.
This was after my bub reacted oddly to me eating eggs when she was 2wks old. now 11wks and no reaction at all. her digestive tract is now coping with everything. but both hubby and I do not suffer from any food allergies so we were not worried about that. hope this makes sense and im typing one handed.
Hi,
I've found that DD reacts to food with a lot of tomatoes - I also had a majorly unsettled DD after eating spaghetti bolognese when she was around 8 weeks. I've recently started reintroducing tomatoes, just a little bit at a time and have found that ok (DD now 5 months). Still haven't retried spag bolg yet though.
I didn't have to cut out anything, but I did have to cut down on a few things.
I had 1 coffee per day and drank decaf if I was to have anymore. (funnily enough, after 9 months, I actually prefer decaf!)
Instead of half a block of chocolate, I had a couple of pieces (learnt that one at easter!!!) :o
Garlic was never a problem, although my dad was always going on about it! hehe
I stayed right away from caffine, cos that certainly set him off...
It's totally trial and error, but like other posters have said, it's varies from one woman & child to another
xxx
I ate a bowlful of coleslaw for lunch once while breastfeeding DD.
Will never do that again!
Had no other bad reactions to anything though.
