if your son/daughter was on lactose free formula how did you know they were ready for normal formula? so what i'm asking is if they grew out of the lactose intolerance how old were they? How did you know they were ready for normal formula?

my ds is on a lactose free formula and he is 16 months. his peaditirican has told us to keep ds on the lactose free formula till the end of the year then we are to slowly try to re-introduce dairy to see if he has grown out of his lactose intolerance. because ds cant handle soy either we are going to try to introducing soy first to see how he goes with that then do dairy. some kids never grow out of lactose intolerance. i was a lactose intolerant bub and had to be on a soy formula and then i grew out of it and now i get sick and a really sore tummy if i have too much dairy so it can come back.
my advice would be to consult with your gp or peadtirican before you try to re-introduce dairy :)
DD#1 was lactose intolerant and was on soy as she was also allergic to the milk protien so she had to have soy formula and then soy milk. It was around 3 that she was able to tolerate most dairy foods. I slowly introduced it with margerine, small amounts of milk etc and now she has it all no problems!
DD#2 is only lactose intolerant. I have no idea how long it will last for.
I think you just have to play it by ear, so to speak. Take it very slowly and keep in contact with his paed or gp, they will be able to help you with the intro of dairy foods.
ETA: Is this regarding your baby or your older son?

My son was on it until about 20 months - now we just use lactose free milk as he doesn't like soy (and I don't blame him)
My doctor is going to test him when he is 3 and if it is still really bad then ther is an exzyme that they can take that will break it down and they won't get sick.
I don;t need a test to tell me how bad it is - small amounts of the wrong thing set him off.
Research it a bit though - you would be surprised that there are some dairy foods they won't react to.
I am interested though mums - what sort of reaction does your child get and how long does it last for.

my ds is 16 months and has reacted to commercial baby foods containing as little as 2 % dairy or soy. the slightest bit sets him off. he vomits within 10 mins and then for the rest of the day or night he is filling his nappies with the runs and he will wake up screaming in pain :( the longest its lasted is 24 hours.

Sounds a bit like my man. It usually starts about 5 hours after he has the dairy. He will cramp and scream for anywhere from 5 hours to 12 hours. Then he gets the runs which can last for days. Its so cruel. The poor little buggar is in that much pain he won't let you touch him.
Its funny though my son can eat one brand of yogurt and thats the petite miams - the little tiny ones and have no reaction. Give him a drop of milk or cream or any other yoghurt and it starts. I have also found that certain brands of cheese set him off.

My DD2 was on Karicare L/Free Formula until she was 12 months , the peadeatrician then put her onto Digestilac Low lactose powdered milk. She tolerates that, though she has only in the last couple of day tolerated a teaspoon of yoghurt OR cheese without the runs or being sick.
So, hopefully she is growing out of it.:fingerscrossed:
DD1 would vomit within minutes of having anything with even a remote bit of dairy in it, she would get deorhrea (sp?) too.
DD2 would have moucasy poos and would cry all day long and fight me every bottle. She would drink only 20-50mls and then scream for hours! Would vomit alot too. As soon as we changed her to lactose free formula, she changed!
