I recently moved to a sandfly and mosquito infested area and am being driven insane with being attacked by these insects. My arms and legs are just covered with bites. I brought some insect repellent from the supermarket (the first time I've used it since I was in primary school) and my arms and legs are now covered in a lovely very itchy, red, bumpy rash. I really need an effective and more natural repellent that is kid safe and hopefully infant safe for when bubba is born (good value would be GREAT, seeing as it will be used in bulk quantities). Any ideas?

I like the plug in mortein ones... but you have to remember to change the cartridge daily.
Failing that, I have a rub on one here that's all natural, baby safe, and it doesn't actually repel but it covers your body odour so you don't attract them IYKWIM.
It's called Naturalene Bug Rid (http://www.organicsaustraliaonline.com.au/prod3042.htm).
Sorry probably a bit late but I use a mixture of 100ml water and 1 ml each of eucalyptus oil, lemongrass oil, citronella oil and tea tree oil. They need to be essential oils (not fragranced). 1 ml is about 10 drops although you can make it stronger if required, although I know you have to be careful with some oils when pregnant (Tea Tree is one that shouldnt be applied direct but I believe diluted isnt a problem). Although it may cost a bit the first time if you dont have the oils its certainly cheaper than buying expensive toxic repellants thats for sure!
PersonallyI hate aerosols as the mist they spray stays in the air for ages and is extremeley dangerous both for the environment and our lungs when inhaled.
Good Luck with those nasty bites :)
I think maybe not a good thing to use insect repellent (normal store brought type) - as I read on the news before that this will cause birth defects.
I found a link:
