Hi there
My son currently BF and FF and has decided he no longer wants to BF although i still have alot of milk but never enough to bother with exprssing.
My questions are ....... my boobs still are producing milk so how do i stop that
and how long did it take you to 'be back to normal in the booby department? '
Your thought are appreciated xx
I weaned Andrew 2 weeks ago (or maybe 3...not sure!) and I STILL have milk. I went through a few days just recently of being really engorged and feeling like I could feed a football team. It seems to have settled down, but it is STILL there.
I'm not sure if there is anything you can do to dry it up. I'm not desperate enough yet to do anything about it, hopefully it will get the hint soon!

By all accounts, milk hangs around for several weeks.
My DD was born on 3/8 and I stopped b/feeding her on day 3. It now appears that I have mastitis, so obviously there is still milk in there.
There is medication that your Dr can prescribe to dry up your milk, but is only used in extreme situations. My Dr mentioned this to me today, but said it wouldn't be necessary.
To stop milk production, just leave your breasts alone. They will become engorged and really sore. You can hand express a little to relieve pressure if you need to, but don't stimulate too much or milk production will continue. Take panadol for pain relief if you need it, and use cold compresses (cabbage leaves are recommended) to ease things too. It will take about a week for the worst of it to pass.
Good luck

Sorry to go OT, but Nicole - I just noticed that our boys share a birthday :)
they also share it with me!
I too have just stopped bf one week ago and yes they tell you there is nothing you can do, but apparently drinking sage tea helps dry the milk up.
and ive been using cabbage leaves and ice packs as they help with the inflamation... my doctor told me that they no longer like to dispense the medication that stops the milk*"bromocriotine" as it seems to have alot of side effects especially to the brain , The med works by stooping the hormone prolactin which makes you produce milk, and appaently the fda dosent approve this drug?.
The first two weeks is a critical stage to try and prevent mastitis or possible abscess of the breast and milk can remain present for some months..
My poor boobs have had mastitis in the 2nd day and i have been on antibiotics scince i stopped bf but hopefully things will settle down.
Goodluck!

Hi,
hi i had stopped bf about 3 weeks ago, and was really concerned as didn't know what to do with my breast as i stopped bf suddenly. I went to the dr who advised that the worst thing i could do is leave them as i would be at risk of getting mastitis. So she wrote down a plan for a fast wean(expressing milk) to stop my milk coming in. Let me know if you want me to add to thread!? Or i can email it to you?

I stopped on the 1st and still have a little bit of milk.
When I got to the really really painful engorged stage I expressed off (empty) the once and although they got sore again for a few days after that it wasnt painful like before.
Due to personal reasons I have decided to no longer BF. The way the CN told me to do it is to reduce 1 feed a week. Choose the feed that is the most difficult and give a bottle for that feed. I have chosen the 10pm feed first so I just didn't give that feed as BF. I did feel a little engorged that night but it got a little less each day. Next I am getting rid of the 2.30pm feed. My plan is to then get rid of the feeds in this order - 10.30am, 6pm, 7am and the middle of the night. I don't know if it will work but I have had no problems so far. I guess it depends on how quickly you want to stop BF as this way will take six weeks.
