I started my son on Farex rice cereal at 4 1/2 months, with no problems. At 5 months I gave him some with a bit of fresh pureed mango mixed in, with no problems. A couple days later we did it again, and he had a big vomit. He continued to gag and vomit for 1.5 hours, then had a breastmilk feed, another big vomit, and then he was ok. I waited a week to give him solids again (he may be teething and has been cranky). Today I gave him a small feed of Farex. He had three small spoons then refused it. Later he did the vomiting thing again, not as bad because he hadn't consumed as much.

It didn't occur to me that the rice cereal was the problem, since it had been fine before. I have been keeping it sealed, clean, and dry, and have had it open less than a month so am not concerned about contamination. Other than this my son is a very happy healthy baby.

Does anyone know why he would be fine on the cereal to start, and now get sick on it?

What are you mixing it with? Water, ebm, or formula?

I have found that the farex used to go off within a week or two.

Thanks for your replies.

I'm mixing it with ebm, and then using it straight away.

Mickie, how did you know it had gone off? Other than bub vomitting, that is, which isn't a very nice way to find out. I had tasted it both times it made bub sick. The first time it tasted really good, 'cause it had some mango in it. The last time we had some I did think it tasted a wee bit sour - but not bad. Like I said it just didn't occur to me that dry cereal could go off.

I'm thinking I'll make my own cereal in the future.

Could just not agree with his stomach in general, no matter how it's made.

I personally wouldn't use it & use ground oats instead

I don't know how to explain it but it just didn't seem fresh perhaps trying a different brand?
