View Full Version : Migraines - suffering badly
Hi - i am currently 6.5 weeks pregnant with second child.
I usually get 1 migraine about one every 4 or so months but now am pregnant have had 4 in last 4 days - throbbing head and blurred vision.
When i was pregnant with first child only 1 migraine in whole 9 months.
Anyone elso out there also suffering with migraines and anyone who can give me some hope that they will get better by 2nd trimester.
Has anyone tried acupuncture for migraines whilst pregnant? I have tired acupuncture years ago when not pregnant to great success.
Throbbing head!

I am also a long-term migraine sufferer. When I first got pregnant my migraines went away. I went through a short phase when I got a migraine every few days (around the 20week mark) then nothing at all for the rest of the pregnancy. My OB gave me a prescription for Panadine Forte but this gave me the most agonising heartburn/reflux that I preferred to have the migraine. My daughter is now 5 months old and I have only just got my first migraine since November last year :( They seem worse than I remember, but that could be because its been so long, and its impossible to lock myself away in my bedroom and sleep it off.
You could try visiting a chiropractor - a lot of times migraines are caused by your neck/skull being out of alignment. I went and saw mine two days ago and am feeling a lot better.
I've had a few bad headcches this pg, no migraines yet. My OB said the headaches should go by about 22 weeks. A visit to your Chiro (if you have one) to check everything is aligned properly might also help.

they were a symptom in both my last pregnancies - but not this one oddly enough..
my 2nd? pregnancy was the worst time with my migraines...
.....i was taking panadeine forte for 4 days straight [after a week of hell] & it still wasnt really working...
so i went to dr's & found out i was preggas, then i panicked for the whole pregnancy that i had harmed bub because i was taking too many... [sometimes i would take 3 at a time  ]
its really hard with migraines, all you can do is just relax & be patient for them to pass... nice dark quiet room, the only place that doesnt make it feel worse... [but it doesnt really cure]..
good luck with it, hopefully it wont last too much longer for you..:banghead:
Hi Kerrin - your email gives me hope that perhaps i am going through a burst of them and then hopefully none for rest of pregnancy. I have 14 month old so also impossible to lock myself away.
Yes I will try a chiropractor as I couldn't get appointment with acupuncture (Andrew Orr here in Brisbane) until October.
thanks Kellie
Let me know how you go at the Chiro - while you are there ask them what services they offer with babies because mine has done wonders with my daughter. Check out this thread:

I am also PG and a long time migraine sufferer. A couple of weeks ago I had a real doozie which landed me in hospital on a drip
I have since bought a TENS Pain-Eze machine.
In case you haven't heard of this, it is a small gadget which runs on a battery and has electrode pads that I place on my temples. It works by sending a pulse through the nerves, therefore interfering with the pain signals going to the brain.
About a week ago I had the start of another bad one so I used the machine for the first time and I only needed 1 panadeine tablet and an early night. What heaven compared to normal!
It can also be used on the back during labour.
Here is the website where you can get more info on the Pain-Eze and order one if you wanted to;

I hope this helps :)

I get them - hormone related. I end up in hospital normally, and when I am pg all they can do is give Maxolon and paracetamol. They will give a one off dose of codeine phosphate, but then no more as it is not good when you are pregnant. Maybe speak to your GP about having some maxolon (it helps the body absord analgesics) in the house. Good luck - they really suck don't they?

I am only 6wks and suffering as well... this is my second time around and it feels worse this time around. Last time I had very bad headaches not quite at migraine stage every day throughout the first trimester. I cant wait for the first trimester to hurry along...

I have tried remedial massage for migraines in pregnancy and it was very helpful BUT....
you need to find a well qualified person who knows what they are doing, as there are points in the neck and shoulders which they need to avoid in pregnancy.
You could try an osteopath.
