I've decided I don't wanna spend money on wipes anymore though I still need to buy some for daycare, though at home I have been using flannels on Nathan's bum and around his penis but he has a red rash. I use nappy rash cream and let him go without a nappy for a while, but the rash doesn't seem to be going. Is it because of the flannel? We used to use those Huggies wipes which are great but as I said, don't wanna spend money on them anymore.

How are you washing the wipes? I'm thinking it's to harsh (make sure you only use 1/2 recommended amount of laundry powder/liquid). I use disposables with cloth wipes and wash mine in a cold rinse then a warm/hot wash.

I wash in cold rinse too and only use a small amount of laundry powder, it's just cheap store brand powder though..

maybe it's too wet? Like, his bum's still wet from the flannel when you put a new nappy on? I know when i use cloth wipes (old rags) i sometimes need to make them quite wet to clean properly, then i always have to use a towel to dry ds's bum before a new nappy goes on.

I would double rinse the nappies and use less than half of the recommended dose.

Could he be teething? Sometime teething causes a red bum.

Hmmm maybe I might use baby powder with them. I only use powder after baths. I'll see if that helps..

Just use good old cornflour, works a treat and is far safer/cheaper/more effective than baby powder which contains Talc.

like normal cornflour that you use in cooking?

He's also in sposies now, but seriously thinking of terry flats..

Yep, normal cooking cornflour, is awesome for nappy rash

I just found out you can get cloth wipes, what is the difference between those and a washer?

cloth wipes are generally made of softer material - like proper flannel as versus terry toweling fash washers

I used the soft velvet type of washer on my kids nappy area (when they were in nappies)

Ahhh ok, we do have some special baby flannels here that are a lot softer than normal flannels which have a rougher serface, might just stick to those. I am just using warm water on them though. And then some rash cream if he has a rash and some powder (once the powder runs out though I'll get some cornflour for rash as JabberJaw suggested).

Are they terry? I had the same problem with terry washers. They are far too rough.

I changed to using flannelette. I just bought a metre or 2 and cut it into squares. It frays the first couple of washes but is ok after that. I've also cut up old flannellette baby wraps to use as wipes.

Also when they do have nappy rash I put a squirt of sorbelene on the damp wipe, it makes it less grippy and just gently slides over their skin.

Some are terry, some are just normal flannel ones.
