I went to my OB today as I am convinced that I have a kidney infection. I have had them all my life and I do my own checks and it can be actually life threatening to me if the infection is left untreated. I went to the OB to give a urine sample so he can check for sure and also wanted to ask what risks the antibiotics would be to my unborn child.......well! He just looks at me and says that basically the only tests that have been done have been on rats and "so far, so good!". I looked at him puzzled and asked him whether he thought it would be safe and he just shrugged and said it was up to me! What The???!!!!! I am NOT a doctor, I have no idea what will happen to me or my child, surely he could have been more supportive! I walked out of there with a prescription for an extremely strong antibiotic and he said it's "up to me" whether I choose to take it. I know for a fact that he is trying to absolve himself from the situation because if something happens and he told me to take them then maybe I would sue or something. I can understand that but unfortunately I am at risk no matter what I choose, if I take them maybe something will happen to the baby, if I don't maybe my kidneys will shut down and my baby will probably not survive anyway! Am I being too picky?

No, the guy has been no help to you at all!
I would say the ab would be fine or he really wouldn't have given it to you. He's just being a smarty bum.

Sounds like godawful bedside manner to me, but it also sounds like he was being exactly straight with you.

The only tests in pregnancy with the drug so far have been done on rats. And so far, there's been no ill effects. However, there haven't been any conclusive tests on humans.

There's just not enough information to make a properly informed decision, and he's not going to force your hand. He can't tell you if there's any significant risk - and it's your choice whether you go into unknown territory or not.

What other information could he actually have given you?

I can accept that there is not much research and that he cannot make a fully informed decision, however as a paying, pregnant, potentially with a serious infection, person I would have expected more compassion rather than a fob-off attitude. I had a lot of issues with my twins, so he knows how worried I am, so for him to be so blase I think was a bit callous.

No disagreement there.

I can't believe there isn't a 'known' antibiotic for pregnant women with a Kidney infection...what year are we living in? :banghead: I've had a few kidney infections before and it's not like you can just ignore it. I'm with princess niamh the Pharmacist is probably your best bet.

I guess the reason would be that they would have to test on pregnant women and I guess they figure it is too risky??
