View Full Version : Not gaining weight...
Does anyone have suggestions for healthy weight-gaining food? Sounds like a bit of an oxymoron, but I am about 14 weeks and am still under my starting weight of when I first got pregnant. I know you aren't really supposed to gain much in your first trimester, but I know I need to start gaining slowly now. I am naturally a skinny build and lead a very active lifestyle with a relatively healthy diet, but I expected to be gaining some weight not losing it (especially with not having any morning sickness).
In addition, I'm a bit concerned that I haven't gained weight yet. Seems like something you wouldn't complain about, but I know that being underweight can be just as bad for baby as if I were overweight. When did you start gaining?
Not sure about what you can eat to gain weight but I didn't put one kilo on till like 28 weeks!
So I wouldn't stress to much at 14 weeks. At that age bub weights next to nothing
I lost weight at the begining of my first pregnancy and didn't get back to pre preg weight until about 28 weeks. Ended up putting on 10kgs above that by the end so I wouldn't worry about loosing weight at the begining.
Everyone gains weight differently during pregnancy. For me, both times, my weight didn't change until about 18-20 weeks, when I had a massive growth spurt and put on 4-5 kilos in 2-3 weeks, and then another similar growth spurt at about 30 weeks or so. The weight I've put on in all the other weeks has been fairly minimal.
Don't stress. I didn't weigh myself until 24 weeks with DD1 but with DD2 I had gained 2kg at 18 weeks. I'm underweight to begin with but it was no problem...my midwife wasn't even weighing me.
With DS (my third) there was more concern because at 16 weeks I'd gained 6kg which was a huge amount for me personally. But it slowed down and by the end of all three of my pregnancies I'd gained a similar amount of weight (13-14kg).
So long as you are eating enough nutritional food to supply baby with what it needs then there really is no need to worry (easier said than done sometimes though I realise :hugs:).
If you really are worried and would like to add a bit extra to your diet, try something like Sustagen Hospital grade from the Chemist (not the stuff from the supermarket). This will add exrtra calories to your intake along with extra nutrients so it's a win/win for you.
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy :hugs:
Hey hun, i wouldnt worry to much. Maybe try do abit less off physical activity and try have a high protien/fat diet.
I only gained 2kgs in my 29weeks off being pregnant with my twins but i did have really bad morning sickness, they were born at 2lb 8oz and 3lb.
Now at 35weeks pregnant with a singleton baby i think ive gained around 10kgs but i havent justed on the scales to get a true weight and my OB think this bby will only be 5lb-6lb max at 38weeks
I was the same as you i lost weight in the 1st trimester and as soon as i hit the 2nd Trimester i started gaining weight. I think it is only a problem if you Dr is concerned. Don't worry it will happen.
Thankyou for posting this one coz I'm in the same boat, I'll be 19w tomorrow and my weight has not changed however I am comforted in the fact my belly is growing it's huge for 19w people keep asking are you sire there's not two in there lol.
My face has thined out same with my bum and thighs, I eat well and lucky for me there was no morning sickness.
Good luck and I hope we both gain some weight soon
Thanks ladies :) I am not in a hurry to gain weight if I don't have to this early, I just thought I was supposed to. I'll just add a little more protein and keep eating healthy. Thanks for the reassurance.
I lost weight, enough that even when I started to gain, I was still under my starting weight. I started at 81kg, ended at 83kg the day before I had DD.
I *think* I started gaining at around 25 weeks, I could see that I was obviously getting bigger, but losing fat elsewhere at a rate high enough to keep the numbers if not smaller then stable :/ Not recommended at all, but its how my pregnancy with DD went
She's perfectly fine, for the record :D
I pretty much didnt gain any weight til 20weeks. (I was 55kgs prepregnancy). My obs weighed me every appt and it was never mentioned as a concern. By the end of my pregnancy though I had gained 17kg but still needed to go for an extra scan at 30weeks as my bump was only measuring 26weeks. The weight i put on unfortunately wasnt bump weight, it went straight to my thighs!
Im 14 weeks and havent gained any weight. havent lost any though either. im just holding steady for now it seems
Not everyone gains a heap of weight during pregnancy.
I gained a mere 7kg in 42 weeks of pregnancy which resulted in a 10lbs 4oz baby.
I didn't start gaining until I was well past 20 weeks.
