Hi, my beautiful son developed a horrific nappy rash when he was three days old that took 6 weeks to clear. It was so bad his skin was bleeding and he was in a lot of pain. After trying a lot of different products, many visits to the GP and a referral to a paediatrician we couldn't find any creams that would stick to his raw and bleeding skin.
We had tried a paw paw, calendula, zinc, zinc and castor, bepanthen, ungvita, hydrozole, dermaid, canesten, Curash powder etc. Nappy free time was a disaster because he was a newborn and poo oozed out of him constantly so it actually aggravated his sore bum rather than giving it a break.
In the end we called our local stoma association who recommended an ointment called Orabase. It is for mouth ulcers and so sticks really well to wet areas. Its available at the chemist. After six weeks of nappy rash, it stopped bleeding overnight and completely cleared in a week.
For skin that is not bleeding but still needs a thick barrier cream the best product we found is called Penaten. Most chemists don't stock it but can order in within a day. It is much thicker than other barrier creams.
If the rash gas a fungal component we found Daktozin to be the best product.
For prevention we now use Sudocrem during the day and Penaten overnight.
Hope this helps someone who is struggling with bad nappy rash and on the merry-go/round of creams and potions! Feel free to message me if you're in a similar situation and have questions.
