View Full Version : Another cows milk intolerance question (sorry!)

I have read back over a number of threads, but all of this stuff is majorly confusing... so apologies if i am going over old ground, and for the long post.

Our 3 youngest have all been "chuckers", and never been good sleepers. They have also had poo issues, the whole bubbly and frothy as babies then mainly constipation and pain as toddlers. For the boys, chucking stopped when they were weaned onto the bottle and we went to LF formula, so I assumed that fixed it and left it at that. Poo issues have continued once weaned onto cows milk. We are now at the point with DS (20 months) where he too is having pain and hard pebble poos, and have (finally) decided to investigate further.

The Paed told DH at first appointment that lactose intolerance is unlikely, and it is more likely that DS has an intolerance to cows milk. She suggested cutting it out and switching to soy, then retrying it in 3 months. She also suggested that most kids "grow out of it" around school age.

I wasn't there, so couldn't ask her, but I am wondering:

* If lactose isn't the problem, why did LF formula help with vomiting?
* Is soy really safe, given it has the phyto-estrogens (sp) which i worry may interfere with his hormones??
* iF we don't use soy do we use LF milk, A2, rice milk etc etc??
* Do we have to supplement him with calcium while all this is going on?
* SHould we have mentioned to her the family history of ASDs, and the fact that our older DS is showing some signs of Asperger's (age 3)... is there likely to be a link?

I know some of you ladies have been down this path many times, and I would love love love to hear some of your wisdom (she says, begging:o)

many thanks.

Maybe because the process that the formula goes through also starts to break down the proteins in the CM

Schools out on this one in my mind, however I preferably avoid it for my DS.

Also *if* it's CMPI (Cows Milk Protein Intolerence) then it's also likely that Soy Proteins will elicit the same reaction

How old is your child?

Try all the milks one at a time for at least two weeks and watch for symptons/improvements.

We use Rice Milk AND a calcium supplement and try to ensure we also have heaps of leafy green vegies (the calcium in these is absorbed better than milk or supplements)

Cows Milk is a FOOD, not a drink - so for hydration go straight for water and an occassional fruit juice

See above :p

There is some links for some children for some conditions, not all people with ASDS, Autistic or Asperhers have food issues, and not all kids with food challenges have other conditions either

Some kids with ASDS etc do appear to improve with a strict diet, and some kids with behavioural issues (as distinct from ASDS etc) do improve their behaviour with a strict diet

I woudl mention it, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are related or will improve with diet, but it can't hurt to try a strict diet like Fail Safe

Good Luck
